Over the past decade or so, research into the gut–brain axis has grown exponentially and science has now revised its understanding of how these seemingly separate bodily areas interact.
In fact research in this area is discovering that not only is nothing separate, but that everything is connected and indeed, relies on everything else for balanced and optimal functioning.
Wow, that is sounding holistic!

And it makes sense - if you think about “going with your gut” to make a decision or getting “butterflies in your stomach” when you’re nervous, or diarrhoea before a big exam or stomach ulcers from stress (so many examples when you start thinking about it). Some researchers are referring to it as the “second brain” hidden in the walls of the digestive system firmly linking our gut microbiome and the integrity of the intestinal wall to our mood and sense of wellbeing.

So how can that be?

It seems there are a number of plausible mechanisms to explain this connection ranging from a direct link between the brain and the gut via the Vagus nerve (the body’s longest nerve); microbes in the gut that release neurotransmitters into the blood stream that then circulate through the brain affecting brain function; gut bacteria that interact with immune cells to reduce inflammation that is implicated in mood disorders, as well as other metabolic and endocrine pathways.

It will be interesting to see what light future research can shed on the effects of antibiotics not just on gut health but also brain health and mental health!

More reasons why eating well and looking after your gut health are so important for physical and mental wellbeing.

The gut microbiome is considered by many researchers to be the most important scientific discovery for human healthcare in recent decades.
So what is it and why should we care?

It is a teeming microscopic community consisting of vast numbers of microorganisms that coexist in our bodies with the largest numbers found in our gut.

In a healthy person, these microorganisms coexist peacefully and play many key roles in promoting the smooth daily operations of the human body – such as stimulating the immune system, breaking down potentially toxic food compounds and synthesising certain vitamins and amino acids.

In short, it appears to play a vital role in the body’s innate ability to maintain normal functioning and to heal and repair itself.
Conversely, an “unhealthy” gut microbiome (termed dysbiosis) has been linked to a plethora of diseases and conditions, from diabetes to autism and anxiety to obesity.

So how do you know if your gut microbiome isn’t healthy?
The most obvious signs are symptoms like bloating, wind, constipation, diarrhoea, nausea, heartburn and, as the research suggests, poor immunity.

Improving the health of your gut microbiome is crucial to regaining and maintaining good health and wellbeing.
It doesn't need to be complicated or expensive and now is a good time to get started! Visit www.bendigonhc.com.au and organise an appointment.

Now that Winter is almost here, it is a great time to improve your general health and immunity.
Here are 5 things you can do to help prevent illness and keep you and your family well!

1. Eat well for key nutrients to support your immune system.

• Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that helps the body fight infection. Best sources of Vitamin C include red capsicums, dark green leafy vegetables, kiwifruit, citrus fruits and berries. Vitamin C supplements of at least 500mg daily are a good idea in winter.
• Zinc has an important role in maintaining a healthy immune system through the production of infection fighting white blood cells. Zinc inhibits the growth of certain viruses and reduces the susceptibility to colds and flu. Good food source include – meat, eggs, seafood, nuts and seeds.

2. Look after your gut

As amazing as it sounds over 70% of your immune system cells are found in the lining of your gut. This is why it is so important to ensure your gut has plenty of friendly, good bugs to enable optimal immune functioning. Taking a probiotic daily will maintain a good population of beneficial microorganisms. Any good quality broad spectrum probiotic will help.

3. Think about how you live!

• Manage stress! Decades of research has highlighted the impact of stress on the immune system. Chronic stress has been shown to suppress immune function and result in poor response to treatment. Chronically stressed people get sick more often.

• Get adequate rest/sleep – many people live busy lives and are always on the go. Good sleep habits and rest are essential for healing, repair and restoration of the mind and body. Do you need to slow down or take time out? If you are chronically tired due to poor sleep – ring for an appointment. You will feel better for it!

• Get enough fresh air and sunshine. Fresh air is revitalizing and uplifting while sunshine is essential for good mood and vitamin D production. Low Vitamin D levels are common in Australia and have become an important public health issue. Vitamin D is needed for healthy immune function and deficiency is linked with diabetes, various types of cancers, mental health conditions, osteoporosis and heart disease. It is difficult to obtain enough Vitamin D through diet alone and with less sun around in winter, a supplement is a good idea for many people

4. Use Immune stimulating and infection fighting natural medicines

• Homoeopathy offers fast acting medicines chosen on a case-by-case basis for both acute infections and recurrent infections.
• Herbal medicines such as Echinacea, Andrographis and Olive leaf support immune function and reduce the severity of common cold symptoms.
• Celloid minerals – help to relieve congestion, pain, inflammation, and fever when taken at first signs of a cold.

• 5. Make an appointment.
Professional advice can help get you feeling better faster!

Important new research into the complexity of the homeopathic healing response

What’s New in Homeopathic Research…

Dr. Iris Bell M.D., Ph.D. (University of Arizona College of Medicine) is internationally renowned for her work in the field of integrative medicine. She is a brilliant researcher, having received her bachelors of science degree from Harvard (Magna Cum Laude) and her M.D. and Ph.D. from Stanford University. She was also a National Science Foundation Predoctoral Fellow.

In a just published research paper, she explores the practice of homeopathy in the context of what is called complex systems and network research.

After years of studying the matter, Dr. Bell believes that properly chosen homeopathic medicines communicate individually relevant information to each patient. According to her research, the body's defense mechanisms recognize the information that the correctly chosen homeopathic remedy conveys as a weak external/internal environmental stressor or danger signal. It’s this signal that helps the body mobilize neural and cellular defenses. The body’s networks then use cell to cell signaling to amplify the information provided by the remedy. The results are disproportionately large and often lead to a robust healing response.

Sceptics frequently claim that their is no scientific evidence for homeopathy. This paper by the late Dr Peter Fisher - the Queen's homeopath for 17 years - shows that that is clearly untrue! For those interested in homeopathy, this paper is an easy and interesting read.

Hello. Did you know there's lots of evidence showing the positive effects of homeopathy? This paper by the late Dr Peter Fisher, homeopath to Her Majesty the Queen, outlines some of the most recent scientific studies. ow.ly/WnUh50Ab6EK
