Family Eyecare is a family owned independent optometry practice in Bentleigh that has been providing the highest standard of personalised service and vision care to all patients for over 80 years. Our consulting rooms are fitted with the latest digital technology (OCT, Visual Fields and Optos Wide-field imaging). Experienced optometrists assess vision and eye health (cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy), as well as the specific needs of children’s vision. Our wide range of quality spectacle frames provides options to suit all faces, prescriptions and budgets. No-Gap packages are available, as well as the latest fashion styles from brands such as Ted Baker, Kate Spade and Marc Jacobs. Our lenses are supplied from trusted laboratories such as Hoya, and are available in the latest thin and light materials as well as advanced technology designs. We fit the latest in comfort-enhanced breathable contact lenses, including multifocals and torics for astigmatism. Rebates available from all health funds through our HICAPS claiming.

👋 Meet Rachel Chipere, our newest optometrist at Family Eye Care!

Rachel began her journey in optometry with a double degree in Bachelor of Medical Science (Vision Science) and a Master of Optometry from Flinders University, South Australia.

With over eight years of experience as principal optometrist and co-owner of a rural independent practice in South Gippsland, Rachel brings a wealth of knowledge and care to every patient she sees.

Her special interests include children’s vision, dry eye management, and therapeutic eye care. Rachel is also skilled in fitting advanced contact lenses, including for patients with keratoconus and post-corneal grafts — having completed the Certificate in Advanced Contact Lenses through the Australian College of Optometry.

Fun fact: Rachel has lived on 3 continents AND has three kids under the age of four, so life is always an adventure! 👧🏽 👧🏽 🧒🏽

👓 Meet Annette Tiu: Our Expert Optometrist at Family Eye Care 👓

We’re thrilled to reintroduce Annette Tiu, a cherished member of our team here at Family Eye Care in Bentleigh!

Annette graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Optometry from Melbourne University in 1990. She then dedicated a decade to the Victorian College of Optometry, where she advanced to the role of Senior Optometrist and contributed to the Clinic Board of Management. In 2001, Annette joined our Family Eye Care team, bringing a wealth of knowledge and experience.

She further expanded her expertise with a Postgraduate Diploma in Advanced Clinical Optometry in 1998 and a Graduate Diploma in Ocular Therapeutics in 2001.

We absolutely adore Annette for her bubbly personality and her fantastic frame choices that always make our patients smile.

Fun Fact: Annette’s favorite dogs are Westies, especially her beloved Teddy. She also “enjoys” teaching her friends how to play mahjong!

👓 Meet James Baumgarten! 👓

We’re thrilled to reintroduce James Baumgarten, our esteemed optometrist at Family Eye Care!

👨‍⚕️ James graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Optometry from the University of Melbourne in 1990. He spent three impactful years at the Victorian College of Optometry as both a clinician and an instructor. In 1994, he joined Family Eye Care, and in 2003, he earned his Graduate Diploma of Ocular Therapeutics, allowing him to prescribe a range of prescription topical eye drops.

🌟 Beyond his clinical expertise, James also served on the council of the Victorian College of Optometry for a decade, finishing in 2004.

🎉 On a lighter note, James is a passionate Hawthorn supporter, a devoted Pink Floyd fan, and has enjoyed playing cricket for 40 years. These days, he’s finding golf a bit of a challenge!

We’re so lucky to have James as part of our team!

Did you know your eyes can get sunburnt too?

As the summer sun blazes, remember to slip, slop, slap AND slide on some sunnies!

Just like your skin, your eyes need protection from harmful UV rays. Without proper eyewear,
you're at increased risk of damaging your vision.

Consistent, unprotected exposure to the sun may lead to issues like cataracts, pterygium (a fleshy growth on the eye), skin cancer of the eyelid, and premature aging around the eyes. Ensure you have a pair of sunglasses with a category 3 for effective UV protection.

Children are also especially vulnerable, so make sure they’re also equipped with UV-protective sunglasses to reduce the risk of developing conditions later in life.

Let’s keep our eyes safe this summer!
