There has been a lot of press about the demise of bulk-billing, and the increasing number of GPs who are now shifting to mixed or private billing.
Many people don’t seem to understand how bulk-billing works and why many GPs are now considering charging a fee for service instead of relying on the rebate that Medicare assigns for their services.
From 1st November we will become a mixed billing practice.
Our fees will still be the lowest in the area and below the AMA recommended rates too! On average our consults with incur roughly a $30 gap to you. Bulk billing will continue for under 16 years and over 65, Healthcare and Pension card holders.

We as a General Practice are impacted the same way as every other business with the increase of cost of living and the lack of Government increase to Medicare rebates.
Please note that when you attend a doctor you agree for the Medicare rebate to be allocated to your GP which is $39.75 for a normal visit. From this the rebate, they must pay room rent, nurse and admin wages, insurance, medical indemnity, power, water, superannuation, Tax, consumables and general overheads.
This leaves the doctor with less than $10 take home per patient.
Please understand that the Private billing decision was not taken lightly.
Children under 16 years of age, Health Care Card Holders and Aged Pension Card as well as those who are 65 years old or older will be bulk billed.
100% Private billing will apply to Week Days, Weekends and public holidays.
Our priority is to always provide you with the ultimate Health Care and therefore a decision has been made to go PRIVATE BILLING from 1st November, 2022

How much is 20 minutes of your GP's time worth to you? For example, I am a sole trader with 15 years worth of professional training behind me, so what is the economic value of my time to you? (And put into comparison the average tradesperson rate of $120-200/hr, lawyers $250-350/hr). If your answer is "but healthcare should be free", take that up with your local member. Only the Government have the power to pay you more for your healthcare needs to be free of charge. They need to keep up with the cost of running a practice, and they haven't (not even close), so who suffers? You do, and so do the GPs.

Every time your GP bulk-bills your consult, they take more than a 50% pay cut to what the AMA recommends they should charge. They absorb that for you. It's slowly killing their business viability. That's why they're introducing a gap.

You know what is also slowly killing GPs? Misdirected anger. Please. It's not our fault. Please learn, and commit to understanding better. Want cheaper healthcare? Start turning up the heat on the Government to give you higher Medicare rebates. And perhaps show a little compassion for your hard-working GP who would be much richer if they got a cent for every time they have to explain to people that we're not Medicare-funded puppets, we're small business owners just trying to keep our business AND our patients alive while the media and some big wigs are trying very hard to make you believe that we're the enemy.
