We gather in 6-week Seasonal Cycles. Unlike traditional programs, we dance to the rhythm of the land, following the ancient wisdom of the D'harawal people, graciously shared with permission by Aunty Francis Bodkin. By immersing ourselves in nature's embrace over these cycles, we don't just form a community - we become stewards of the earth and each other. Continuity in relationship with children, adults and Country enables us to build on inquiry, lean into collaboration and notice changes over time. Our 2024 dates are:
* 21 May - 28 June
* 16 July - 23 Aug
*10 Sept - 18 Oct
* 5 Nov - 13 Dec
* Summer holiday program 18-20 Dec + 8-25 Jan

Come and hear the laughter echoing through the bush shelter in Bugong as we gather for another day of adventure, bushcraft and nature play. Join us as we explore the picturesque landscapes and ecosystems of Gerringong, Berry, Shoalhaven Heads, Bomaderry, and North Nowra. Together, let's weave experiences of wonder and awe amidst the whispering trees and babbling creeks. Register here for your nature immersion experience: www.bookeo.com/natureplay

CURIOSITY | I went walking... what did you see?

We noticed the high tide belonging to the magic pull of the full moon.

We noticed the change in shape of the sand dunes since we last played in this spot.

We noticed all the banksia cones on the ground and the branches down after a storm.

We noticed birds nests in trees.

We noticed animal tracks in the sand,

& we noticed the tiny little sandflies back on the overcast day!!

JUST YOUR AVERAGE WORK DAY | a Bush Tribe mentor diary entry

"It was a gentle start to the program and a hot one. Luckily we had the cool of the trees to shelter.

We practiced our noticing skills, it’s easy to blunder through the day without taking the time to be conscious of noticing. I’m hoping as our weeks progress our noticing also deepens. We took notes on the weather and listened to what the animals were telling us about the day. Cicadas trilling- Hot day.

A child shared her knowledge about when butterflies are out it’s the right temperature for snakes. This was new knowledge for me and I was very stoked that a few other of the children held this knowledge also. We saw a pair of Golden Whistlers - a new bird for me to learn.

We noticed at the end of the day how the cicadas were still at it but the birds had gone quiet. Some of us went for a walk and noticed the tide had come in and we saw 4 Eastern water dragons and used our frogs and reptiles reference book to distinguish between the Eastern Water Dragons and the Bearded Dragon."

OBSERVATION | slowing down, listening, looking ahead, above, below, behind...

When children form relationships with place, they develop care for the world and their role within it. We encourage mark making, writing, sketching of what we see, hear and feel when playing in nature.

Taking our records home, they prompt storytelling, advocacy and information sharing with our families.

NOT QUITE A HAIKU | we gave capturing what a day of Nature Play is like a go. Perhaps not award-winning poetry... but you've got to start somewhere. 🌼 🙂

Sticks become swords.
Leaves become soup.
Mud becomes masterpiece.

This is childhood.

Laughter echoing through trees.
Faces smudged with dirt.
Pockets full of treasures.

The good stuff.

BELONGING | research is showing that our young people are lonely like never before. Bringing them together in moments of unstructured but gently held experiences provides space for children to form their own connections, share experiences and collaborate on group projects.

It is a delight to watch mixed-aged friendships develop over a Nature Play session. We set up open-ended materials, quiet areas, boisterous games, and watch the children choose their own adventures.

LEARN BY DOING | embodied learning is the opportunity to touch, test, watch, fail, try again, experiment and succeed.

Each Nature Play session offers children the opportunity to use real tools, ropes, found objects and specialised bushcraft equipment to design, craft and engineer. This is science and technology in action!

Our homeschool programs follow a 5wk cycle, enabling children to work on a project over a sustained timeframe, make adjustments, test designs under different weather conditions and master skills.
