EXERCISE TO PREVENT SHOULDER PAIN

Repeat about 5 times. Try this 2–3 times a day.

Shoulder stretch
Stand and raise your shoulders. Hold for 5 seconds. Squeeze your shoulder blades back and together and hold for 5 seconds. Pull your shoulder blades downward and hold
for 5 seconds. Relax and repeat 10 times.

Door lean
Stand in a doorway with both arms on the wall slightly above your head. Slowly lean forward until you feel a stretch in the

πŸ”ˆ SCALENE MUSCLE STRAIN

The Scalene Muscles are located in the neck and are not a single muscle but a group of muscles which course from the cervical vertebrae to the upper two ribs of the body. These muscles are innervated by the branches of the cervical and brachial plexus. The Scalene Muscles are divided into three separate muscles. These muscles are scalenus anterior muscle, scalenus medius muscle, scalenus posterior muscle. Coming to the function of the Scalene Muscles, they are used in breathing as they elevate the ribs during process of taking in air for breathing. Scalene muscles also facilitate movement of the neck from side to side and also bending the neck in front.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF SCALENE MUSCLE STRAIN

The symptoms of scalene muscle strain are much similar to many medical conditions and may be mistaken for a serious illness rather than just a strained muscle. The patient with Scalene Muscles Strain can experience pain in the neck radiating to the chest, shoulder, and arm area. The patient will also find it difficult to move the neck from side to side or bend the neck forwards.

Some of the medical conditions which may result in Scalene Muscles Strain are:

1. Asthma
2. Emphysema
3. COPD
4. Pneumonia
6. Bronchitis
7. Allergies.

Some of the activities which may result in Scalene Muscles Strain are:

1. Sitting in front of the computer for long periods of time without much neck movement can cause the scalene muscles to get strained.
2. Working with the arms overhead repetitively and for long periods of time may also result in straining or injuring the scalene muscles.
3. Athletes playing basketball where they have to lift their arms repetitively.
4. Heavy lifting, pushing, and pulling activities can cause scalene muscle strain.
5. Wearing heavy backpacks especially during hiking expeditions
6. Trauma to the neck with significant jarring of the muscles such as when in a motor vehicle accident.

TREATMENT

The treatment for Scalene Muscles Strain or injury starts with first improving the neck posture. You need to make sure that you keep moving the neck when sitting in front of the computer. You need to identify what may have been the cause of the strained scalene muscle and if it has been caused due to something which can be avoided then eliminating those activities may be of help. Always use a pillow which is neither too high nor too low such that the Scalene Muscles are in traction at the time of sleeping at night. Stretching techniques for scalene muscles and massage may be beneficial as well.

THE IMPORTANCE OF A HOLISTIC APPROACH

Your arms and hands are a key part of how you interact with the world around you. There are 2500 nerves endings in your fingertips, which allow you to perform complex tasks of fine motor control and to sense subtle changes in your environment. It can take something as simple as a paper cut to make you realise how important your hands are in everyday life.

Your hand, arm and elbow are influenced by the mobility of your shoulder and neck through their muscular relations and nerve supply. Alongside this, most of the muscles that control your grip, originate from your forearm and so it's important to understand the cause of any problem to ensure you receive a correct diagnosis and effective treatment.

Arm pain is commonly caused by the overuse conditions of tennis and golfer’s elbow, and nerve entrapments such as carpal tunnel syndrome and thoracic outlet syndrome.

The picture below represents what your massage therapist see in the anatomy books vs. the reality.

IT MAY NOT BE SCIATICA, THOUGH SYMPTOMS ARE ALMOST THE SAME.

The piriformis is a small muscle located deep in the buttock, behind the gluteus maximus. It runs diagonally from the lower spine to the upper surface of the femur, with the sciatic nerve running underneath or through the muscle. The piriformis muscle helps the hip rotate, turning the leg and foot outward.

As a result of overuse, injury, or strain, the piriformis muscle can tighten, swell, or spasm. Sports that involve repetitive forward movement of the legs, or problems in surrounding joints like the sacroiliac joints are typical causes of piriformis syndrome.

The location of the piriformis muscle near the sciatic nerve means that when the piriformis muscle is irritated or injured, it can affect the sciatic nerve as well.

Symptoms of piriformis syndrome include tenderness and pain in the buttock area, accompanied by sciatica-like pain, numbness, and weakness that runs down the back of the thigh, calf, and foot. Pain from piriformis syndrome is often worse when walking up stairs, after sitting, or while walking or running.

Piriformis syndrome is often confused with other conditions, especially lumbar spine conditions. Attaining a proper diagnosis of piriformis syndrome is important when considering treatment for low back and leg pain.

Piriformis Muscle Self Release Ball Technique:

After finding the piriformis muscle place the release ball onto it. Then straighten the leg and lean over with your weight on the muscle and roll onto it. Roll slowly back and forth on the ball finding that Sweet Spot. Continue rolling for about 2-3 minutes and then switch over to the other side doing 2-3 sets.
