⚠️New safety warning for medicines used in arthritis and other inflammatory conditions⚠️

The 3 Janus Kinase (JAK) inhibitors available in Australia for chronic inflammatory conditions are baricitinib (Olumiant), tofacitinib (Xeljanz and Xeljanz XR) and upadacitinib (Rinvoq).

Groups of people at higher risk of serious side effects are:

• those aged 65 years or above
• those at increased risk of major cardiovascular problems (such as heart attack or stroke)
• those who smoke or have done so for a long time in the past
• those at increased risk of cancer.

If you belong to one of these higher risk groups, you should only be prescribed these medicines if there are no suitable treatment alternatives.

If you have any of the risk factors and you take a JAK inhibitor, discuss your current treatment with your prescribing doctor. They may change you to a different treatment depending on your inflammatory disorder.

Do not stop the treatment without discussing it with your doctor.

“Once upon a time, not so very long ago, before Coles sold vitamins, before there was a [Bachelor of Health Science (Naturopathy)], before there was a complementary and alternative medicine industry, there was the traditional herbalist. The practitioner of the garden and the hedgerows and the waste lands, and the bush was the keeper of the old ways, the old knowledge, the ancient wisdoms, the elder, the sage. That is where we find [our founder Lyndsay Shume], walking the well-worn paths of ancestral knowledge and bringing that knowledge to modern times.” Adapted from Evelyn N. Vale Dorothy Hall in the Journal of the Australian Traditional Medicine Society, June 1, 2012.

BLUE COHOSH | Blue Cohosh (Caulophyllum thalictroides) is an important remedy for female complaints. Historically, it was used to prepare the uterus for labour (partus praeparator), for period pain and for various ‘inflammations’ of the uterus. It is generally classed as a uterine tonic. 🫐

BABIES DON’T MANIPULATE-THEY COMMUNICATE

On a recent trip to the park, I overheard a parent ranting and raving about a little one “being a brat and always pitching fits.” It took me less than two seconds of looking at the child to realize his mother had put him down on hot asphalt without shoes on, and his ‘fit’ was actually cries of pain as he danced around trying to keep his poor little feet off the asphalt while trying to push past his mummy to get back into the car. In a few years this mother will wonder why her ten-year-old is always so sullen and silent.

Later the same day in the supermarket, a three-year-old asked her mummy what plastic wrap was for. The mother rolled her eyes and snapped, “For wrapping food in plastic, duh.” A few years from now, this mother will confess to a friend that she has no idea why her nine-year-old is so mouthy and rude.

I love liquid herbal tinctures! They are amazing!

Especially during times of stress. When our nervous system is on fight or flight (SNS- sympathetic nervous system dominance). Yes I’m looking at you COVID!

We release chemicals like adrenaline and cortisol.

Great when we are trying to get away from a Sabre tooth tiger 🐅, not so great when we are trying to live our daily lives.

Prolonged exposure to adrenaline and cortisol can affect our bodies in so many ways:

🍃Disrupt our digestive system- bloating, cramping, pain, frequency,

🍃Lower immunity- recurrent colds, thrush, cold sores, Swollen lymph nodes. Allergies and hay fever going haywire.

🍃Dysregulate the circadian rhythm- sleep is all out of whack

🍃Impact reproductive hormones- this is a big one ladies

Like increasing symptoms of PMS, acne, shorter cycles, no cycles, infertility, heavier flow, more pain.

🍃Blood sugar dysregulation- the cravings for carbs, carbs and more carbs with a side of chocolate 🍫

🍃Weight gain- even if you are your doing all the right things the scales aren’t shifting the way you want

🍃Poor tissue integrity, increase risk for scarring and stretch marks

🍃Increase inflammation- increase sensitivity to pain, aching joints, headaches, worsening of pre existing conditions that have an inflammatory component like eczema.

🍃Poor energy- prolonged exposure to stress not only chews through the cofactors to the energy pathways of our bodies like Krebs, yes you B vitamins. It also affects our adrenals ability to mount a response, less adrenaline less cortisol. Less ability to respond to it.

Coffee ☕️ doesn’t touch the sides?
You can even sleep after a cup? Feeling like you have been hit by a Mack truck in the am?

You might be here GAS- general adaption syndrome.

What can you do?

Lots!

It’s time to nourish the PNS- parasympathetic nervous system.

The rest and digest.

Meditation, baths, yoga. All cultivate the Rest and digest nervous system.

Sometimes we need more help getting back in balance, like supplying some nutritional cofactors and taking a herbal tincture, help to even make the first positive steps to change.

Some of the herbal actions that can help our bodies recover

🍃Adaptogens- herbs that increased the body’s resistance to physical, environmental, emotional, or biological stressors and promotes normal function

🍃Adrenal tonic- herbs that improves the tone, histology and function of the adrenal glands

🍃Antidepressant- herbs that aid alleviating depression

🍃Anxiolytics- herbs that alleviate anxiety

🍃Cognition enhancing- herbs that facilitate learning, integrating new information and memory

🍃Nervine- herbs that improve tone, vigor and function of the nervous system

🍃Neuroprotective- herbs that prevents damage to the brain and /or the spinal cord

🍃Nootropic- herbs that enhance cognition and facilitated learning, interesting new information and memory

🍃Sedative- herbs that reduces activity, especially within the nervous system- sedatives can help to alleviate pain, spasm and induce sleep

🍃Thymoleptic- herbs increase and elevated mood

🍃Tonic- herbs that improve tone, vigor, and function of the whole body

🍃NS Trophoreatorative- herbs that has a healing and restorative action on the nervous system

All amazing actions!

The wonderful thing about herbs 🌿 is that one herbs has multiple actions.

As a herbalist, I use multiple herbs in a tonic that is bespoke, created for you as an individual, for your unique symptom picture, constitution and causality. 🌿💖💖💖

Our hearts aches on this day. You are not alone. We remember the babies that were so deeply wanted and loved, and the mum who love them.

To the mums whose hearts have ached with love for their babies, we think of you, especially on Bereaved Mothers' Day.
