The thumb plays an important role in relieving throat discomfort, particularly for clearing heat and soothing the throat as well as easing a dry, sore throat. When the throat feels hot, dry, irritated, or mildly painful, stimulating specific points on the thumb is commonly used as a supportive self-care approach.
One key point is Shaoshang (LU-11), located at the outer corner of the thumb nail on the side facing the index finger. This point is traditionally used to clear excess heat from the lungs and help relieve sore throat, hoarseness, and dryness. Gentle pressing or light pinching for about 30–60 seconds can help calm irritation and reduce the sensation of heat. Another important point is Yuji (LU-10), found on the fleshy pad of the thumb on the palm side. Massaging this area with moderate pressure for one to two minutes may help reduce lung heat and support throat moisture, making it especially useful for dry, scratchy, or painful throats.
In addition, the inner side of the thumb—from the base toward the tip—is often treated as a throat reflex area in hand reflexology. Slow, gentle stroking or circular massage along this line can help ease throat irritation and dryness, particularly when combined with oil or balm. These techniques can be practiced two to three times daily as a complementary method for symptom relief. While thumb acupressure may help soothe discomfort, persistent or severe sore throat, high fever, or worsening symptoms should always be evaluated by a healthcare professional.
