Making my way through the doors of Point Walter Medical Centre in Bicton, I notice a pharmacy to my right. Under the large sign “Pharmacy”, there’s a banner, bright and clear, showing me I’ve reached my destination, Mediscan.

After expressing my interest in having a hair test, a lady motions me to a small office and hands me an envelope to fill in my details. She explains how my hair will be collected, how much they’ll need, and when I’ll receive my results. As I’ve come in on a Monday morning, a convenient email at the end of the week sounds good to me!

She informs me that there are many doctors and practitioners recommending this test to their patients, however, like me, a customer can just come in to have it done if they’re curious about their toxicity levels. As someone who doesn’t have a referring practitioner, I ask if there’ll be any interpretation along with my results. The answer? Yes! The report includes my results, whether there’s a presence of heavy metals, and a suggested compounded item.

It’s clear from the get-go that, at Mediscan, the focus is on you, the customer. With friendly well-trained staff, this unique Perth-based firm is produces highly accurate and non-invasive results. They’re here to help detect the presence of heavy metals in your body such as: aluminium, arsenic, lead, and mercury. The hair tissue mineral analysis (HTMA) is also used to check for mineral imbalances such as: boron, chromium, iron, iodine, magnesium, and zinc.

Originally a cooperative between five Perth based HTMA practicing doctors and three Perth practicing pharmacists, Mediscan was formed in 2006. Their aim was to service the HTMA requirements of Western Australian practitioners. In those days, the testing was done overseas, and the turnaround time was three weeks. With interest and demand growth, the group reduced that time to 3-9 days by forming a relationship with the Centre for Forensic Science.

When I speak to the lady, about my family having their tests done, she tells me they can order a hair test on the website. That, aside from posting the hair into them, it’s all online! You simply head to their website, www.mediscan.net.au click on, “Order a test” and follow the prompts. Payment is done through PayPal and your report is sent directly to your email. Mediscan has now handled almost 55,000 hair tests, so you can be assured you’re in good hands!

Conveniently located within Point Walter Pharmacy, where there is a team of nine pharmacists on staff, there is always a health professional on hand to provide advice on prescriptions and to answer any questions you may have regarding your report. As a compounding pharmacy, Point Walter Pharmacy can make up your specific compounded item from your hair analysis. They recommend having a retest after six months to see if there’s been any progress.

With a children’s play area, well laid-out easy access shelves, and welcoming staff always ready to help, this place is a friendly, relaxed environment. You can have a seat, have a chat, browse the medical books, look at the new products, and get all the information and help you need.
