π Southern Hemisphere full moon namesπ
Many of the names used for the full moon originate from the northern hemisphere. They are mostly Native American and Celtic names. When European settlers arrived in the southern hemisphere, they brought these names with them. However many of the names are associated with the seasons, flora and fauna, of the north and often do not make sense in the south.
As the seasons are the direct opposite, an easy way to name the moon's in the southern hemisphere, would be to use the names of the opposite season.
You can calculate what they'll be, based upon the timing of the equinoxes and solstices. The autumn equinox is in March, in the southern hemisphere, so the moon nearest that would be the Harvest Moon. The next one, which would fall in April, would be the Blood Moon, followed by the Mourning Moon. The next month would be June, which is the time of the Winter Solstice in the southern hemisphere, and corresponds to the Long Nights Moon, and so forth.
In the southern hemisphere, you may want to try using some these commonly used names for the appropriate month's full moon in 2026. I have also included dates for the new moon each month.
