* Sunshine Coast University Hospital
* Nambour General Hospital
* Caloundra Health Service
* Gympie Hospital
* Maleny Soldiers Memorial Hospital

and a comprehensive range of sub-acute, ambulatory and extended care, community health, mental health and oral health services, and aged care services at the Glenbrook Residential Aged Care Facility. Over the next 10 years, the Sunshine Coast HHS will experience significant growth in both service range and capacity including the construction and commissioning of the new tertiary Sunshine Coast Public University Hospital (SCPUH) at Kawana, which will open with 450 beds in 2016 and expand to a 738 bed facility by 2021. Hello, Cleeve – you’re this week’s Human of Health!

Why though? Cleeve made BIG moves to progress in his career! Starting out in the Philippines where nursing conditions were tough and prospects were limited, he brought his critical skills to the coast to expand his practice and inspire his growth. And grow he did!

“I had never heard of Nurse Practitioners (NP) through my early years as a Nurse until I came to Australia.” Inspired by the emergency NPs he worked alongside, he set out to deliver the same comprehensive, holistic, evidence-based care.

Now an NP at the Minor Injury and Illness Clinic (MIIC) in Caloundra, he feels “blessed to work with a very good team… discussing challenging patients with senior clinicians and other specialists at SCUH.”

When not serving the community, he loves long family walks and short family trips almost as much as a decent nap and a delicious series-binge with his wife. 🛋️

Thanks for your genuine care for your patients, we’re lucky to have you!

It’s Disability Action Week, which is a GREAT opportunity to recognise the challenges and resilience of people living with disability.

We celebrated this by actively improving our skills and knowledge to make the Sunshine Coast a more inclusive community. 🫱🏾‍🫲🏼

Through our event hosted at SCUH, we:

🌻Learned about the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Initiative which supports the 1 in 6 people worldwide who live with hidden disability.

🌻Trained more of our staff to reach our target of 1000 Hidden Disability Sunflower supporters.

🛂Heard from a consumer about his experience with Julian’s Key Passport, a hand-held, patient-controlled tool that makes care more accessible by helping people communicate their needs, preferences, and support requirements.

If the power goes out is your food safe?

If you lose power to your home, keep your fridge and freezer doors closed as much as possible.

🥶A closed refrigerator should keep food cold for four hours
❄️Freezers will usually not defrost and spoil food for at least 24 hours if half full or 48 hours if full. If frozen foods have thawed, they should not be refrozen but should be kept cold and be eaten as soon as possible.

Eating food that's off can make you very sick.

If in doubt, throw it out.

We thought your Monday could use a dog and a baby. So please do enjoy this dog and baby.

One of our lovely local mums will “never forget the compassion and care [she] received from [SCUH]” while welcoming baby Byron via emergency caesarean into the world.

“You can truly tell how caring, kind, and compassionate every single nurse is. Even though you work with babies and new mothers every day, the way you made us feel supported, safe, and cared for was so genuine and heartfelt.”

🌞 Heads up! A hot spell is set to hit this week - stay cool out there!

Hot weather can impact everybody, so it's important to understand what's happening in your body when it's hot and how to protect yourself.

When you sweat more, it's because your body increases blood flow to the surface of your skin. Your heart has to worker harder to do this and reduces blood flow to your internal organs as a result. You also start to lose fluids from all that sweating, which can affect your kidneys. 💦

Humidity makes things worse because your sweat has a harder time evaporating off your skin. This means you'll feel a lot hotter, and your body has a harder time of cooling down. 😓

If you don't take measures to rehydrate and cool down, all of this can result in dehydration and heart and organ failure.

To keep safe and cool, remember to:

💧drink 2 to 3 litres of water a day at regular intervals
📱check in on loved ones regularly (especially the elderly and pregnant women) 🏃 avoid heavy exercise during the hottest parts of the day
❄️ seek air conditioning, or stay in a cool environment
😎 slip, slop, slap, seek and slide if you're spending time outside.

If you or anyone else shows signs of heat-related illness, call 13 HEALTH (13 43 25 84) for advice, or visit your doctor. If it is an emergency, call Triple Zero (000) immediately.

For tips on staying safe in the heat, visit www.health.qld.gov.au/heatsafe.

“We do not know what is happening in our patients’ lives. They may not respond the way we expect, but at the end of the day I get to go home. They may still be waiting for outcomes with fears of the impact, or under pressure from other external forces. So always give the care you would like to receive, or that you would like your family to receive.”

How lucky are we to have this hearty Human of Health treating our community? 😍

Fiona is a Senior Cardiac Physiologist, primarily doing echocardiographs, “in other words, I do heart ultrasounds” (many thanks for clearing this up for us, Fiona). She brings us over 40 years’ experience in public health, and why? “The patients!”

Having a great big heart herself, Fiona took an interest in hearts after working in coronary care as a registered nurse. She decided to train in echocardiography as it married her passions for hearts and heart-to-hearts with patients. ❤️‍🩹

Through her work, Fiona’s contributions to health outcomes for our community are invaluable, as she trains more people in this important practice.

Fiona looks after her own heart by spending time with friends and enjoying her wholesome hobbies; reading, sewing, and (considering) watercolours.

We 🫀you, Fiona!
