Why do acupuncture and herbal medicine work so well for digestion and diarrhoea?
Because as a practitioner of both TCM and naturopathic medicine I see the gut as part of a larger regulatory system — not an isolated organ.
In Chinese medicine, loose stools, urgency and bloating usually point to Spleen Qi digestive weakness, Liver over-control, or Dampness obstructing function.
Acupuncture calms the gut–brain axis, regulates motility, reduces inflammation and restores channel flow so digestion can stabilise and improve.
From a naturopathic perspective, these same symptoms often relate to stress-driven dysmotility, vagal under-activation, microbiome imbalance, enzyme insufficiency or poor mucosal integrity.
Herbal medicine supports both frameworks — strengthening digestion, reducing inflammation, improving microbial balance and rebuilding the gut lining.
When we treat the root patterns and the physiology together, the gut becomes more resilient… and bowels finally settle.
This is why patients often report improvement even after one or two treatments — we’re working with physiology and energetics at the same time.
