π€π§ Collaborative and Proactive Solutions π§ π€
Last year our Occupational Therapists Jordan and Paige attended Dr Ross Greeneβs professional development training on Collaborative and Proactive Solutions.
Collaborative and proactive solutions is an evidence-based, trauma informed model of care that supports caregivers to focus on identifying the problems that are causing concerning behaviours in children and solving these problems collaboratively and proactively. Concerning behaviour is a childβs way of communicating with us that they are struggling to meet an expectation that has been placed on them.
Collaborative and proactive solutions involve asking and understanding from the childβs perspective what is hard for them about meeting the expectation. Then collaboratively working with the child to come up with a solution.
How can parents work collaboratively and proactively with their child to support their behaviour?
πΆ Gather information from the child directly about what is hard for them to meet the expectation.
πΆ Listening to understand what the child is telling you.
πΆ Clarifying with phrases such as βcan you explain that more?β or βI donβt understand, can you tell me more about β¦?β
πΆ Bringing up what you are worried about for the child. For example βI am worried about you not brushing your teeth because I am worried you will get cavities and maybe need work at the dentistβ.
πΆ Avoid power struggles. The best or winning solution is when the child and parent both have their solutions heard and collaborate.
πΆ Lastly, collaboratively working with the child on a solution that is realistic and mutually satisfactory for both the parent and child. Provide the child with the first opportunity to come up with a solution by asking βI wonder if there is a way toβ¦β.
