January is one of the best times of the year to organise an assessment. With a new school year approaching, it can provide clarity, confidence and a strong start for children who may need extra support.

At Step by Step Psychology, we offer:
• Cognitive Assessments
• Specific Learning Disorder Assessments
• ADHD Assessments
• Autism Assessments

Why January is helpful:
• you get results in time for Term 1 planning
• teachers start the year with a clear understanding of your child’s needs
• supports and adjustments can begin early
• reduces stress during the busy first weeks of school

If you’ve been wondering whether an assessment might help your child in 2026, January is an ideal time to get started.

Thinking about next year?

November is a great time to plan ahead - especially if your child might benefit from an assessment, a check-in or extra support before Term 1 begins.

Planning now gives families time to:
• understand learning or emotional needs
• set up supports early
• reduce stress during the January rush
• help children feel more confident walking into a new year

A little preparation now can make a big difference in how 2026 begins.

Change can feel big for children - whether they’re starting school, moving into a new year level or adjusting to Term 4 routines.

Here are four gentle ways to support them through it:
• talk openly about what’s ahead
• keep daily routines steady
• acknowledge emotions without trying to “fix” them
• celebrate the small wins and growing confidence

Little moments of connection make transitions feel more manageable for children, especially during busy times of year.

Term 4 can feel busy and full. Children often show tiredness in their behaviour, emotions or concentration before they have the words for it.

Recharging doesn’t require big changes, just small adjustments that allow space to slow down:
Simpler evenings
Earlier bedtimes
Gentle weekends
Time with no expectations
Celebrating wins

Little resets help restore calm, connection and steadiness as the year winds down.

Calm in the Chaos

Calm doesn’t always mean quiet.
Sometimes it’s laughter over dinner after a busy day.
Sometimes it’s pausing to take a deep breath before responding.
Sometimes it’s choosing connection instead of correction.
When life feels chaotic, calm comes from small, steady moments- a shared smile or simply slowing down together for a minute.

You don’t have to make everything peaceful.
You just have to bring a little calm into the chaos.

AUTISM ASSESSMENT AVAILABILTY:

We have one more Autism Assessment appointment available with Kate before the end of the year.

Kate works with children and adolescents using a neuro-affirming and family-centred approach, helping families gain clarity, confidence and the right supports for their child’s needs.

If you’ve been considering an assessment, this is a great opportunity to start the process before the end of the year.

As the school year wraps up, many children start to feel the pressure with tiredness, school changes, exams, and big emotions all at once.

Our psychologist Daina supports children and teens to understand these feelings, manage stress, and find calm during the busyness of Term 4.

Through gentle, practical strategies, she helps young people finish the year feeling more confident and settled so that they are ready for a fresh start in 2026.

Term 4 can feel busy! School events, homework and end of the year changes all happening at once.

Taking just one mindful minute each evening can help children (and parents) slow down, reset and reconnect after a full day.

Try this tonight:
Pause together.
Take a few deep breaths.
Notice what you can see, hear, and feel in the moment.

It’s a small ritual that helps children learn calm, focus, and presence...even when life feels busy.

Exams can bring pressure for students and parents alike. A calm, structured approach can make all the difference.

Plan ahead – create a simple, realistic study schedule with breaks.
Prioritise sleep – a rested brain remembers more.
Keep it balanced – include healthy snacks, movement, and short outdoor breaks.
Stay connected – encourage children to talk about worries or stress.
Model calm – show balanced routines and positive self-talk.
