Jet lag is a short-term sleep disorder. It usually happens after you've travelled quickly through multiple time zones, usually after you have been on a long flight.

It happens because your body's internal clock, or circadian rhythm is disturbed. It may cause feelings of tiredness and discomfort.

Jet lag may become more of a problem as you get older due to slower adjustment of body clocks to new time zones. Staying hydrated, avoiding caffeine and alcohol during flights, and gradually adjusting sleep patterns can help reduce jet lag.

Grief is the natural emotional response to the loss of someone close, such as a family member or friend. Grief can also occur after a serious illness, divorce or other significant loss.

Grief has no set pattern, and it’s expressed differently across different cultures. Some people like to be expressive and public with their emotions, while others like to keep their feelings private.

The effects of grief can often resemble depression. Some people do develop depression following a significant loss. If you are dealing with a major loss and finding it difficult to cope, see your doctor.

What causes ear infections? Bacteria, viruses or fungi are usually responsible for an ear infection. You are more likely to develop an infection if your ear is exposed to bacteria or viruses. This could be because of a generalised illness or an injury in, on or around your ear. Factors that can increase your chance of developing an ear infection include:

- having a cold or other respiratory infections
- air pressure changes, such as occurs on planes
- swimming in dirty water
- cleaning ears too much with cotton buds, causing scratches
- cuts or scratches on the outer ear
- not drying ears well after swimming or bathing

Why is good hand hygiene important?
Germs collect on your hands as you go about everyday life. When you touch your eyes, nose or mouth, the germs can spread to these vulnerable areas. So one of the best ways to avoid getting sick and spreading illness is to frequently wash your hands.

Hand washing helps prevent the spread of infections such as common colds, flu, COVID-19 and gastroenteritis. This is important, especially if you care for babies, older people or sick people who are more vulnerable to these illnesses.

Hay fever and cold symptoms often overlap, making it tricky to tell them apart.

It helps to remember that hay fever causes itchy eyes and a clear runny nose from environmental triggers like pollen. Colds on the otherhand bring fever and a sore throat from a viral infection.

What is memory loss?
Everyone forgets things sometimes. Perhaps you can't always remember where you left your keys or think of the word you need straightaway.

Minor memory loss can happen as a part of normal ageing. These small changes in memory don't interfere with your everyday life. However, major changes in your memory are not normal at any age. If you find yourself forgetting important things more often, this is memory loss.

If you are getting forgetful or confused, you might be worried it's dementia. There are also other conditions that can lead to problems with your memory.

Quitting smoking is one of the most important things you can do to reduce your risk of cancer. Tobacco smoke contains more than 7000 chemicals, including over 70 carcinogens (chemicals known to cause cancer). There are immediate health benefits as soon as you quit smoking, even if you already suffer health problems.

No matter how long you have smoked, quitting will benefit your health in both the immediate and long-term future.

Liver function tests (LFTs) are common blood tests that check how well your liver is working. They measure different proteins, enzymes and other substances in your blood.

These tests help:

• find liver disease and liver problems
• check how severe any problems are
• track how well treatment is working

Your liver is a large organ in your abdomen. It helps your body by filtering harmful substances and breaking down medicines and alcohol. It also supports digestion, makes bile and produces important proteins and enzymes.

Kidney disease (also called renal disease) is when your kidneys are damaged or don't function as they should. If you have kidney disease that lasts for more than 3 months, it's called chronic kidney disease (or CKD).

Your kidneys' main job is to clean your blood and make urine (wee) to get rid of waste products. When your kidneys don't work properly, waste and fluid build-up inside your body.

Chronic kidney disease gets worse over time. It can eventually lead to kidney failure. If you are diagnosed and treated early, you may be able to slow down or stop your disease getting worse.

About 1 in 10 Australian adults has signs of chronic kidney disease. Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people are twice as likely to have chronic kidney disease.
