Sunshine Coast Health has shared this story about funding support for a research project led by a dedicated, passionate healthcare improver. One of the founders of Snap Paediatrics - Dr Scott

🚨 Making EDs safer for kids 🚨

Congratulations to Paediatric Emergency Physician Dr Scott Schofield, whose ChildSAFE project has received an Emergency Medicine Foundation grant, with support from Clinical Excellence Queensland’s Healthcare Improvement Unit. 👏

ChildSAFE is working to co-design a digital child safety screening tool for Australian Emergency Departments, helping teams spot, document, and manage child safety concerns earlier, more effectively, and in ways that are culturally safe and clinically relevant.

“Managing child safety concerns in busy EDs can be challenging,” Dr Schofield says.

“With the right digital tools, we can better support clinicians – and protect children.”

The first phase is all about listening: gathering perspectives from clinicians, families, and diverse communities, including Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander, and culturally and linguistically diverse groups. Because early detection can change lives.

✨ This project has been years in the making, and with EMF + HIU support, it’s set to make every ED visit a safer one for children.

Scary when we realise how many places these little batteries are hiding... 🫣😬

🧲 Magnets are hiding in plain sight and they’re more dangerous than you think. Magnets might look harmless but when swallowed, they can cause life-threatening injuries.

They’re tucked inside everyday items you might not think twice about:
🧸 Children’s toys
🧱 Building sets (including adult desk toys)
💍 Jewellery and accessories
💇‍♀️ Hair clips and barrettes
🧷 Badges and pins
💼 Clasps on bags, cases, and wallets
📱 Tech gadgets and phone accessories

Paediatric surgeon, Dr Giorgio Stefanutti, warns, “if a child swallows two or more magnets, they can attract each other and connect inside the body. This can cause serious internal damage and can be life-threatening without timely treatment.”

Children are naturally curious and magnets don’t always look dangerous. 👀 Check your home. Spot the hidden hazards. Keep small magnets away from small hands.
