🌻Let's talk massage and pregnancy🌻
Massage during pregnancy can absolutely be both a form of emotional and physical self care and it can be extremely beneficial to manage the strains placed on women's bodies throughout pregnancy while aiding the body in preparing for birth.
But, in some cases it can also pose serious risks to women and babies. These risks are not isolated to 'high risk' pregnancies. They can also be present in 'low risk' pregnancies, with and without a known pregnancy related condition.
If you are pregnant or planning to start or expand your family and would like massage, whether relaxation or remedial, it is very important to find a therapist who has completed their post qualification pregnancy massage course. It is also important to run it by your primary health care practitioner for your pregnancy, whether that's an OB, midwife or your GP. They know you and your pregnancy and are in a position to make that decision as to whether or not you and baby are safe receiving massage.
Sometimes a low risk pregnancy will have one factor which makes massage contraindicated, others will have high risk pregnancies where massage is part of their management plan.
Key take away: make sure your therapist is qualified in pregnancy massage, understands pregnancy related conditions and complications and will prioritise you and baby's health above filling their books
