Excellence In Integrative Collaboration. We did it. Thank you for ALL the support to win this award. Thank you Bodhi Holistic Hub I am so delighted with the award for a few reasons.

Firstly, I have always been Holistic. I believe I was born with the ability to see a person completely. OT has supported this with our ability to assess all areas of life in a holistic way. The gentle analysis of mind, body and spirit by the observation of everyday activities. Motivation, environment, roles and general life are all considered. Anything from dressing yourself to engaging in hobbies, work, relationships and relaxation. OT is and always has been Holistic.

Secondly, it is a passion of mine to integrate ancient wisdom and complementary approaches into my sessions. Weaving energy, nature and animals into the fabric of my OT practice results in the whole basket being greater than the sum of its parts.

And thirdly, my practice has integrated OT, speech pathology, teaching, art therapy, equine assisted counselling with other services and sessions like reiki, massage, African drumming, kundalini yoga, voluntary and work experience opportunities. Throw in some animals at the farm and a couple of wheelbarrows of dirt and the science is complete.

In my opinion. This IS the future of healthcare. Qualified and registered professionals learning the approaches which blend some magic into the mix of evidence based practices.

Don’t forget that ongoing clinical supervision is a recommendation in the Australian minimum competencies.

Some good options out there to set up for 2026 including Sarah Munn - registered OT experienced in paediatrics and mental health.

I love the concept of job crafting. But I have more recently started seeing it as life crafting. Where I work out where I am most effective and where I can add value to my own experience. This is something I do either when I’m struggling and realise I need some data on what I’m doing with my time. Ummmdadadaaaa faffing. Or at the end of the year for next year’s schedule. One thing I have wanted to set up for years is Donkey Integrated Meditation & Wyda Yoga. I am running my pilot session next week. With Boots my trusty partner (was going to say sidekick but didn’t want to put that out there. Hahahaha). And why? Because….naaawwwww. I just want to. It will fill my cup and hopefully add value to someone else’s life.

Do’s and dont’s of hand feeding. Animals can be very motivated by food and communicate quite clearly. Which is why food has often been used for training. But you don’t actually need food to train animals at all. They love play and praise and some like time with you as rewards too.

Plus hand feeding can lead to animals communicating to want food when we actually want to see a natural desire or ‘consent’ to joining us in partnership for a session.

Frisking pockets, begging and nagging will naturally happen. Even with ‘here’s my bucket. Is there anything to put in it.’ But if this is done by mouths searching little fingers then it’s not so cute. Many people who attend AAT don’t have quick reactions, and if they aren’t in a position to pull their hand out the way, a horse or dog nip can be unsafe and unprofessional and have a negative impact on your client goals.

So we always give food in buckets or bowls. Or deliver it over the fence or through the gate like branches for the donkeys.

There are exceptions. Like when our lambs go a bit feral and we want them feeling safe around humans. Or when we need to do a medical procedure and don’t want to chase the animal to ‘catch’ it. Or to encourage the Guinea pigs to be brave.

Just use critical reasoning and remember it’s a choice as to if you want to encourage hand feeding or if there’s no actual good reason for it.

Offering choice enables animals to feel confident and empowered in therapy sessions. This was a very practical activity as we had Donnie who was losing weight and losing interest in food. We put out different things for him to choose which led to helping us design a diet he could enjoy. He also chose things that were good for him as he was unwell at the time. Loves his Barely.

I love how we are integrating meditation and yoga into occupational therapy. But it’s so important to know how to do this in a responsible way. Understanding and delivering in a trauma sensitive and neurodiverse aware approach is essential when you are opening people up to receiving your words and images. I offer specific clinical supervision to help OT’s integrate ancient wisdom and complementary approaches with evidence based practice using modern and researched ideas. Book in if this is your thing and we can think critically about what you are providing.

Clinical supervision is an essential component to ongoing PD for OT’s working with animals and horses as an intrinsic part of clinical practice. The Australian AAT minimum competencies state that AAT providers are required to engage in “clinical supervision/supervised professional practice by an experienced AAT clinician”. If it’s not hit the top of your ‘to do’ list yet, why not book in a time for 2026 and start the year as you mean to go on.
