What an inspiring couple of days. There are moments in your career when you pinch yourself that you can have a job like this. Teaching Equine Reiki to such an amazing group of dedicated and compassionate people was the sweetest gift. The potency of the experience is never lost on me. From the corporate world to highland cow breeders and busy mums, we connected in the most important way. Through universal loving energy. The horses LOVED it, and we all had a wonderful and deep experience. Me as much as anyone. Because this is how I make a living and yet it feels like a calling or a hobby or a path along which I walk, sometimes holding the hands of others, sometimes carving out time alone.

Often life changing, getting into Reiki and completing level one, can change how we experience life. Forever. It has opened doors for me I wouldn’t have imagined. I feel blessed, and held, in this crazy world of ours. Reiki helps us feel brighter and safer. And for those of us working in the light (where I now place myself with no apology for the pride I feel in that placement having spent a lot of life in a foggy dullness and at times darkness) we need to stay in the light. To lead people out of the dark craziness of their experience. I am not a healer. Only a simple facilitator of something much bigger than all of us. And I love my job!

Here’s the thing about physios and speechies working with animals in therapy. I get asked a lot if I can teach them equine or animal assisted therapy. And yes, of course, this is what I love as well as teaching OT’s, counsellors, social workers and psychologists. Here’s why….

I am an OT whose clinical experience spans 3 decades including psychiatry, neurology, paediatrics, paediatric neurosurgery, intellectual disabilities, neurodivergent folk, mental health adults and children. I love it all.

I understand Hippotherapy as a modality and am on the international Hippotherapy committee run by AHA. I’m accredited with Medicare as a mental health provider so deliver better access to mental health services. As a registered provider with NDIS, I can help navigate different areas of the sector and can meet you wherever you are when you start. Which is different for each professional.

I employ 25 people in a multi disciplinary Child and Family Team. So I understand common areas of clinical overlap and the discrete and exceptional core skills and services provided by different disciplines, how to develop programs and deliver to different groups of people using uniques approaches and skills they have developed.

It is essential to learn about animal assisted therapy and ‘how’ to integrate your toolkit using critical thinking in line with animal wellbeing and attunement. And that takes multi dimensional skill.

So yes I will support your journey if you are a speechie or a physio. Email

Thanks for the heads up about this research Animal Therapies Ltd which is so important to our work in the field of psychiatry. Some of the findings highlight areas where particularly dog assisted therapy can be helpful for our clients with psychotic disorders. Always great to see more research evolving and helping us move forward in evidence based practice.

Don’t miss out on February start dates. Get them on your fridge today and make a step towards your goals. These are professionally developed, educational and transformative courses. The experience of learning together is often a very powerful one and helps you toward living a life in alignment with yourself.

Equine Assisted Therapy is for allied health professionals to get you set up with confidence and learn what you need to do within your competencies. I work with you personally around your horse skills, knowledge and how to apply animal assisted therapy principles within your scope of practice. We get you thinking through the policies and procedures and risk assessments needed and fill your toolkit with practical ideas you can actually use.

Equine Reiki is for anyone who wants to learn about healing energy. You don’t have to be horsey for this one and it equips you to do self reiki and reiki with your pets, friends and family. Book in for Level 2 as well if you want to work in the healing sector. We love the horses to be involved in teaching reiki, as they can really show us the way. Also working with animals as well as humans sets you up to start helping your own horses and pets access healing energy if that’s the way lit up for you.

What is it about the word ‘therapy’ in equine assisted therapy that can be hard to pin down?

In the equine assisted services sector, it can be a confusing term. Confusing even the providers.

Counselling or psychotherapy as equine assisted ‘therapy’ are not the only kind of therapy that can be on offer. OTs, physios, speechies, psychologists, social workers, counsellors and psychotherapists all work in different ways to include horses. Based on their professional skillset, core skills, scope of practice, post grad training and horse experience.

The training and certificate they receive from my courses is specific, so will not use the generalist term of therapy, but will say for example ‘equine assisted occupational therapist’ or ‘equine assisted counsellor’ because this is the work they are providing and charging or claiming for.

The word ‘therapy’ applies to so many interventions from pharmaceuticals to beauty and therefore in the equine assisted space it is very important to identify exactly what the provider does. For this reason there is a call to define it as the more medical term equine assisted ‘treatment’.

There is no ‘curriculum’ or set of therapy programs that is ‘equine assisted therapy’ and therefore it is open to interpretation. Like any activity or connection with nature, sentient beings, animals and humans, there are many things we can do in therapy, and many modalities we can employ.

Of course, the wellbeing of the horse is paramount - the sector will continue to develop approaches to meet the needs of every species involved in animal assisted therapy, and this may lead to changes in what therapists choose to do.

To understand what equine assisted ‘therapy’ is, we should understand our own terminology and the repertoire of models and approaches that can be aligned with horses. And then we must build the research base once we know what ‘therapy’ we are actually talking about.

No horse experience necessary to gain skills in self reiki and reiki for animals and humans. These courses are such a great experience and set you up perfectly for working in the sector, or just supporting your own family and pets healing.

I’ve been really enjoying the school holidays and practicing a different way of working.

Despite the frenetic nature of the kids, I am loving their energy. I’m also settling into a better work and home routine this summer. Cleaning my kitchen before work and avoiding my phone. Makes all the difference to a good start to the day.

I usually try and take the holidays off work (apart from looking after the farm of course, which comes under lifestyle). Sometimes though I can feel like I’m trying to jam essential work meetings into ‘my time’ or working more than I planned to. This can feel sticky and not like the flow I thrive in.

However, 2026 has brought me a comfort in my internal boundaries meaning I don’t feel the need to be so strict on my external boundaries. This has been a lifelong learning for me. It’s helping me to really embrace work as part of the gestalt of my life, rather than seeing it as an interruption to holiday time.

If you run your own business you don’t always get the privileges provided to employees, and leave is never quite the same reset as others can get - they have the opportunity to be uncontactable and not to worry about work. But that’s part of the job as business and farm owner, and I’m totally ok with it. So at times I need to reset the idea of what that is and what that means - it is indeed my choice, my life, and my path. Just like anyone - we choose what we do, where we do it, and how we respond to what happens in everyday life. Some lessons are hard to receive. Others are more joyful. All is valuable.

Some things go well, others don’t. It’s all about acceptance and getting up each morning thinking today is going to be the best day of my life.

So today I have to flow between some family care, physical farm work, working with others, website designing, thinking alone about my professional writing projects. It’s a great balance. So why shouldn’t this be the best day of my life. I’m calling it! Hope you can too.

1.30a.m. American Hippotherapy Association International Hippotherapy sub committee. So glad Pippa Hodge asked me to get involved. Lots to learn from the worldwide network for us down under and for me personally. But getting up for 2 hours in the middle of the night is a test of my passion for the road on which I travel.
