Here’s what you need to do if you feel like food noise rules your life, and it doesn’t involve dieting or medication: you need to let go of trying to control your eating. The more pressure you put on yourself to eat fewer calories, eat less “unhealthy” food, stop snacking etc. the more restricted you’ll feel and the louder the food noise will become. The solution to food noise is less control, not more. If you need support to let go of controlling your eating, we’re here to help you every step of the way.

Dieting creates food insecurity because it teaches your brain that access to food is unreliable. Your brain responds by doing whatever it can to get you to eat when food is available: you think about food all the time, you crave high-energy foods, and food tastes more delicious. When access to food is limited, you’re more likely to overeat when you do allow yourself access to the food, but the guilt that comes with binging leads you to restrict all over again.

Trust isn’t rebuilt overnight. When you stop restricting, it’s going to take some time for you to truly trust that food will always be there. The best thing you can do to help rebuild that trust is to keep eating regularly during the day and eat enough to satisfy your body’s needs. Even if you binge today, you still need to eat tomorrow. Eventually you’ll feel calm and relaxed around food 😌

It’s the season for dinners and lunches with co-workers, friends and family, but often that means a side serving of weight talk at the table. If you’re on your non-diet journey, here are some ways you can respond when weight talk comes up.

There’s a lot of focus on body size right now, and the pressure to be thin can feel overwhelming 😣 Here’s a helpful thought exercise that you can try to shift the focus off your weight.

Make a list of things that your friends and loved ones like or appreciate about you. For example, a friend might say that they appreciate that you always remember their birthday. Next, go through that list and ask yourself how many of those things would change if you were thinner. Probably none of them!

Your friends and loved ones value having you in their life for many reasons other than how you look. You can value yourself in exactly the same way 💗

If you’re finding it tough today and need to talk to someone about your body image, the helpline (1800 ED HOPE) is always an option 🦋

“I want to feel better about my body” is one of the most common responses I hear when I ask people what they’re hoping losing weight would change for them. I get it, I really do! There’s such pressure on people to be thin and toned and have the right proportions… and a billion dollar diet industry that tries to convince you to buy its shonky products to attain the ‘ideal’ body.

But what if I told you that you can feel better about your body without needing to change it? I help my clients to develop a more positive relationship with their body that allows them to appreciate and care for their body regardless of their shape or size. When you’re able to accept your body for how it is, the want to “fix” your body doesn’t feel as strong.

You can accept, embrace, and even love your body exactly as it is now. It’s hard work, but I promise you that it’s worth it 💗

You don’t need to earn the right to eat by exercising 🙂‍↔️ Your body needs a lot of food just to fuel the essential body processes, like keeping your heart pumping and your lungs breathing. So even if you haven’t done much physical activity, your body is still using a lot of energy! You deserve to nourish your body without feeling guilty 💗

If you asked someone to describe what a dietitian looks like, I’m pretty sure that one of the words they would use is ‘thin’. When I was a student, I thought that I had to be thin in order for people to take me seriously as a dietitian. Over time, I learned that it’s actually really important that people see dietitians in a range of body shapes and sizes! As a small-fat dietitian, I’m an example to my clients of how nourishing your body and having a healthy relationship with food doesn’t depend on being a certain size or shape 🙂‍↔️

On this I want to offer a message of kindness and care to any of my larger-bodied colleagues who have felt judged for their size. I’m always here to talk if you want to reach out 🤗

As you go on your diet-free journey, remember that all parts of your experience are valid. It’s normal to feel stuck or feel like you’re in a tug of war between dieting and not dieting. Keep in mind that just because diet culture tells you that you should be trying to lose weight, it doesn’t meant you have to act on that. If letting go of dieting aligns with your values, then keep going on your diet-free journey and treat yourself with compassion in those hard times.

If you’re trying to eat intuitively to help you lose weight, you’re probably just dieting again. Intuitive eating is about connecting with your body to eat in a way that supports a healthy relationship with food. Trying to lose weight ruptures this connection, because it forces you to make eating decisions from a place of deprivation rather than honouring what your body needs and wants.

Remember, you don’t have to try to lose weight in order to feel better about your body. You can heal your relationship with your body even if your body size doesn’t change. If you need support with this, our team of non-diet dietitians are here to help.

What does it mean to be a non-diet dietitian? For me, it means that I care about someone’s relationship to food and eating, not just what and how much they eat. It means supporting my clients to eat in a way that helps them feel well physically AND mentally. It means freedom from food rules and body shame… for myself and well as my clients!
