Like many great discoveries in medicine, it started with an ‘Aha’ moment when Canadian physician Dr. Vincent Maida realised that leg ulcers could be penetrated by fat-loving cannabis compounds, which in turn could reach the plethora of cannabinoid receptors below.

Very few people are more committed to finding a better solution for wound management than Dr. Maida, who amongst other things runs a tertiary wound clinic caring for the most hard-to-heal leg ulcers in the greater Toronto area.

“Integument [the outside skin, cutaneous membranes and mucous membranes] and wound is the area of healthcare with the worst outcome measures,” explains Maida. “And yet, when you look at the massive expenditures – the United States spends upwards of $80 billion a year on wounds. And most of that I can submit to you is in vain and is just silly dressings that do nothing.”

Topical cannabis: A pioneering approach to wound healing.

Public consultations are now OPEN on proposed amendments to the Poisons Standard. At the present moment, cannabinoid medications (THC/CBD) within Schedule 8 are only available for therapeutic use on humans and we believe this needs to change.

This is your chance to have your voice heard. Let’s improve the medical system for animals under veterinary care. Your pets deserve it!

All submissions received by 7 October, 2021 will be considered by the delegate before they make an interim decision.

CANNect Group Lodges Submission to Amend Schedule 8 of the Poisons Standard (the SUSMP) and is asking for the public's help.

Beginning some time in the next week, we are asking for your support to allow veterinarians to access medicinal cannabis treatments. This is an invaluable change for veterinarians, pet owners and their furry family members.

“It is a welfare issue for animals not being able to access medicinal cannabis. I know at the moment many vets may be afraid because they don’t have the knowledge, but that’s what we’re here for, to educate and support.”
- Dr. Marta Calvo Blanco

Cannect Group is asking the public to add feedback to their TGA application focused on rewording cannabis products to allow for veterinary access.

CANNect Group needs your support at the end of August to allow Veterinarians to administer new medicines to pets. More information to follow!

In the last few days, CANNect Veterinary has lodged a submission for a proposed amendment to Schedule 8 (S8) of the Poisons Standard. This will become open to public consultation this August and will last for 1 month.

This amendment involves rewording Schedule 8 of Cannabis and Tetrahydrocannabinols to make these medications available to animals under veterinary control. This is an invaluable change for veterinarians, pet owners and their furry family members.

In the coming weeks we will be inviting you, as a veterinarian or pet owner, to support our application for the rescheduling of these medicines. We will be sharing with you why this change is important and instructions on how to make your voice count! This is your chance to create a positive change in Australia by helping animals to have access to a whole range of new medicines that are beneficial for them.

Please feel free to contact CANNect Veterinary for more information: info@cannectvet.com

The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) highlights the need for further high-quality research into the safety and effectiveness of medicinal cannabis products, as the current evidence is limited and inconclusive.

The current available evidence does, however, suggest a possible role for medicinal cannabis products in a number of areas. Therefore, if after conventional, evidence-based treatments have failed, and the specialist general practitioner (GP) feels that medicinal cannabis products are a viable treatment option for their patients, they should, as other specialists can, be able to prescribe appropriate medicinal cannabis products in accordance with the current regulatory framework.

Please feel free to review the summary of evidence on medicinal cannabis products

GPs are faced with the pressing need to help patients manage chronic and debilitating conditions, with chronic pain affecting approximately one in five people
