How Osteopathy Supports Whole-Body Health 🌿

Your body’s systems don’t work in isolation - and neither does osteopathy. This holistic approach considers how your musculoskeletal, circulatory, and nervous systems all interact to keep you moving and feeling your best.

Through gentle manual techniques, osteopathic treatment aims to restore balance, ease restrictions, and support optimal communication between body systems. The results? The potential for improved mobility, reduced pain, and even enhanced organ function, as circulation and nerve flow improve throughout the body.

Think of it as tuning the whole orchestra - not just one instrument. When every part plays in harmony, the result is better overall health and vitality.

Have you noticed changes beyond pain relief after treatment? We’d love to hear your experience below! 💬

Step into December: Your Month to Move! 🚶‍♀️✨

Stride into December with purpose - and give yourself the gift of movement! Walking boosts brainpower, balances blood sugar, bolsters bones, and brightens your mood. It’s rhythmic, restorative and ridiculously good for you.

And that old “10,000 steps” rule? A furphy! Research shows even 4,000–7,000 steps can make a real difference - especially if you pick up the pace now and then.
So wander while the kettle boils, stroll while you scroll, or turn catch-ups into walk and talks. Explore Christmas lights, take the scenic route, or perambulate post prandially (that’s a walk after a meal).

Make movement your merry mantra this month - your mind, muscles, and mood will thank you!

How will you fit more walking into your December days? Tell us below! 👣

Word of the Day: Jaw 🦴
/ʤɔː/

From Middle English jawe (later jowe), the word comes from Old English ceowan, meaning “to chew.” 🍽️ Scientifically known as the mandible, the jaw forms the lower part of the skull and connects to the temporal bone at the temporomandibular joint (TMJ).

This small but powerful joint is remarkably versatile - opening up to around 50 mm when you yawn 😮, gliding forward to bite 🦷, and shifting side to side as you chew or speak. It’s an extraordinary range of motion for such a compact structure - but with so much movement, things can sometimes go awry.
Enter Temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMD), which causes pain, stiffness, or clicking when the joint isn’t moving as it should.

If you’re suffering, call Body@Boronia on 03 9762 9445 to learn how osteopathy and myotherapy may help ease jaw tension and support smoother movement. 📞

📚 Word of the Day: Ganglion Cyst

/ˈɡæŋ.ɡli.ən sɪst/

Sounds like something out of a Greek epic… “The Ganglion has risen!”, but it’s actually a squishy, jelly-filled lump that tends to pop up near joints and tendons, especially around the wrist.

🧠 Etymology time! “Ganglion” comes from the Greek ganglion, meaning “knot” or “lump of tissue”, which is exactly what it looks like. Not very poetic, but impressively accurate.

Ganglion cysts are usually harmless, but they can be annoying, especially when they press on a nerve or limit movement. While once upon a time the go-to treatment was hitting them with a Bible (seriously), today we prefer gentler methods. Your osteopath won’t bring a holy book, but they will look at joint strain, biomechanics, and soft tissue tension that may be contributing to the problem.

If your wrist has grown a mysterious squishy sidekick, don’t panic - just book in.

And to be absolutely sure you are getting the best care possible, we will liaise with your GP to ensure an accurate diagnosis so it can be managed properly from all sides.

🎾 Got a grip like a pro but pain on the outside of your elbow? You might be dealing with tennis elbow — and no, you don’t need to be a tennis player to get it!

Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis) is caused by tiny tears in the tendon from repetitive gripping, lifting, or twisting. It can make everyday tasks — like pouring the kettle or opening jars — seriously uncomfortable.

👋 Our osteopaths and myotherapists are here to help – we’ll work to improve joint movement, reduce muscle tension, and encourage healing. We’ll also work with you on how to use your elbow without overusing it.

Fun Fact of the Day 🧠

Did you know your skull isn’t fully solid bone until your mid-20s? The process called ossification — where cartilage gradually turns into bone — continues well into early adulthood.

This means young adults’ skulls are still a bit more flexible and resilient, which can affect how their head and neck respond to impacts or strain.

That’s why wearing a properly fitted bike helmet is so important, especially for younger riders. It helps protect that developing skull from injury.

From an osteopathic perspective, the ongoing ossification means gentle care is essential for children and young adults. We work to support healthy growth, alignment, and mobility of the head and neck structures as they mature.

Call 03 9762 9445 to make an appointment with an osteopath at Body@Boronia. We’re here to help keep your head—and body—healthy and supported.

💧 Regular headaches? Don’t overlook the basics — dehydration is a common culprit!

Even mild fluid loss can affect blood flow and tension around the head and neck. If you're prone to headaches, try tracking your water intake for a few days. You might be surprised how much difference it makes.

Your body (and brain!) will thank you.

But if that doesn’t help there might be other factors at play – if you feel like you’ve got a lot of tension (especially in your jaw, neck or shoulders) musculoskeletal causes might be the culprit. Call us on 03 9762 9445. We’re here to help with those.

Please share your favourite headache busting tip in the comments!

Quick Exercise: Tricep Dips

Got a chair and two minutes? Then you've got yourself a tricep workout. 💪

Tricep dips target the muscles at the back of your upper arm, but they also help support shoulder stability and posture, especially if you’re prone to slouching over a desk all day.

Sit on the edge of a sturdy chair, hands next to your hips. Slide forward and lower your body by bending your elbows, then press back up. Keep the movement slow and controlled - no collapsing into the floor, please.

Start with 8–10 reps, and keep the shoulders away from your ears!

How can we help with heel spurs? 👣

A heel spur is a bony growth that develops where the plantar fascia pulls on the heel bone — usually in response to ongoing strain or tension. It’s not the spur itself that causes pain, but the inflammation and tightness in the surrounding soft tissues.

Podiatrists, Osteopaths and Myotherapists look at the whole picture: how you're walking, whether your calves are tight, how your foot arches behave, and whether there's reduced mobility further up the chain — like in your hips or lower back.

We use gentle hands-on techniques to reduce tension, improve foot and ankle mechanics, and support better movement overall. The goal? Less pain, better shock absorption, and happier steps.

Call 03 9762 9445 to make an initial appointment with a podiatrist for an assessment at Body@Boronia — and take that first step towards more comfortable feet. 👟
