Preparing for your My Aged Care assessment? How you approach your assessment matters, and can affect the level of care you can access through Support at Home.
Here are the most common mistakes to avoid:
💛 Downplaying your needs — this isn’t the time to “push through” or say you’re fine if you’re not. If they can't hear your needs, they can't allocate funding for them.
🩵 Only describing your best days — this funding is for your most difficult days. Asking for help is not showing weakness.
❤️ Forgetting everyday struggles — difficulties showering, cooking, cleaning, mobility and memory all count here. Write a list before your assessment so don't leave any of them out.
💛 Not mentioning safety concerns — falls, fatigue, confusion or missed medications are important pieces of your care puzzle. Share them, no matter how insignificant they may seem.
🩵 Attending alone if you feel unsure — a family member or support person can attend your assessment and help you formulate your plan for the day. Have multiple conversations and write down any notes so that nothing is forgotten.
Your My Aged Care assessment can feel like a daunting experience, but with a plan and an honest account of what life is like for you right now, you have the best chance of receiving the most appropriate funding for your circumstances.
