👉🏻 Swipe through the latest fertility treatment insights.

Each year, the University of New South Wales publishes the ANZARD report, which aggregates fertility treatment data from every clinic in Australia and New Zealand.

These findings are based on data collected at the end of 2023, allowing time for thorough collection, analysis and interpretation before release in 2025.

These insights reflect journeys in progress, as well as thousands of dreams of parenthood realised.

In the news 🗞️

With a spotlight on declining s***m counts, male infertility is finally receiving the attention it deserves.

Infertility affects one in six couples, and male factors contribute to around 50% of cases, either as the primary cause or in combination with female factors.(1)

In response, the Medical Journal of Australia has released the first evidence-based Australian guidelines to support medical practitioners involved in male infertility, such as GPs, urologists and endocrinologists.

Developed by an international panel of experts from universities and health clinics, the guidelines outline key steps in assessing male fertility.

Infertility is often viewed as a woman’s issue, and women are frequently subjected to testing to determine the cause. These new guidelines highlight the importance of assessing both partners when infertility is suspected.

By ensuring fertility concerns are identified earlier and more comprehensively, these guidelines may influence the treatment pathway for affected couples, including situations where timely referral for specialist care is needed.

Embryo genomic activation marks the stage in early development when the embryo begins using its own DNA to direct growth, rather than relying on the maternal instructions stored in the egg.

This transition – when the embryo starts producing its own genes – typically occurs around day three of development, once it has reached roughly the 6–8 cell stage.

It is a key indicator that embryologists assess to determine whether an embryo is developing as expected and has the potential to continue progressing.

What happens to your embryos after fertilisation? 🤔

Once fertilisation occurs, embryos are placed in a specialised incubator that mimics the conditions of the female body.

To select the best embryo for transfer, our scientists need to closely monitor how each one develops. Traditionally, this required opening the incubator multiple times – a necessary step at the time, but one that could disrupt the stable environment embryos depend on.

The EmbryoScope has changed this process. This advanced time-lapse incubator features a built-in camera and microscope that capture high-resolution images of your embryos around the clock, allowing our team to observe their development almost continuously without ever opening the incubator.

This approach gives our scientists greater insight into embryo quality as they grow and divide over the next 5–6 days, and improves the chances of selecting the embryo most likely to lead to a successful pregnancy.

Let’s talk about women’s pain.

A recent inquiry into the gender pain gap – aimed at recognising, understanding and addressing the barriers women face in accessing effective pain care – revealed results that are astounding, yet sadly unsurprising.

A survey of 13,000 women and girls found that:

* Menstrual and hormonal conditions were the leading causes of pain (40%), with endometriosis close behind (26%). These conditions are not only painful – they can also affect fertility
* 90% of respondents had experienced pain lasting longer than a year, and more than half (54%) endured pain every single day
* 65% rated their pain between 7–9 out of 10
* 4 in 5 experienced fatigue associated with their pain
* 89% said their pain impacted their mental health.

Perhaps most importantly, 71% reported being ignored, dismissed or having their pain minimised by healthcare professionals.

Pain is not something you should have to endure in silence. Too often, women push through painful periods, discomfort during in*******se or chronic pelvic pain, assuming it’s just a ‘normal’ part of life. But pain is never something to ignore – and at Newlife IVF, it’s something our fertility specialists take seriously, listening with empathy and care.

Our specialists can investigate underlying causes, provide clear guidance and connect you with treatment options tailored to your needs.

PSA 📣 New clinical research from our very own Newlife IVF team.

A couple of months ago, our team travelled to Adelaide for the Fertility Society of Australia and New Zealand (FSANZ) conference.

We presented original research conducted at Newlife IVF, addressing areas of fertility care where limited published literature and guidelines leave clinics navigating complex challenges without a clear framework.

Our first study, presented by fertility counsellor Cath, explored whether IVF-related factors influence relationship breakdown during treatment.

Our second study, presented by our Counselling and Donor Services Manager, Sarah, examined the relationship between counselling session frequency and the need for support with grief and loss throughout the fertility journey.

A special thank you to our Newlife IVF counselling team for their contributions to the record-keeping, preparation and delivery of these presentations, and for their ongoing support of all patients.

Summaries of both studies are now available on our Clinical Research page: https://www.newlifeivf.com.au/clinical-research/
