Bryce Pace - Autism Advocate, is a small autism consultancy business located in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Bryce Pace - Autism Advocate was created in April 2016 when Bryce as a year 11 student wrote a facebook post discussing his disappointment in how his peers were making fun of autism, and also revealing his own diagnosis. Bryce Pace - Autism Advocate believes a world that accepts, embraces and includes autism is possible, we just need to work towards this goal. Bryce Pace - Autism Advocate works towards this goal through providing communities, schools and businesses with our innovative interactive autism workshops. In addition to our workshops we also provide environmental audits, public speaking, general consultancy work and through our inovative recharge room services and other projects that assist autistics and their families to access much needed resources and support.

I am pleased to learn that Mastercard has launched an accessibility hub for Australian businesses to assist them to become more accessible for autistic customers.

As part of this hub, Mastercard have also introduced sensory notes, a way for restaurants to highlight the sensory experience of food on their menus. If you have been to a restaurant, you may have noticed symbols on menus that let you know whether something meets your dietary requirements. Similarly, Sensory Notes indicate how something tastes, it's appearance, how it's prepared, the temperature it's served at and how it is plated.

The idea is that those of us who are autistic will be able to understand if certain dishes will meet our sensory needs. I, however, can also see how this could benefit neurotypicals, as I think we have all had an experience where a dish looked different from what we thought we ordered, as the Chef decided to prepare it or plate it differently than we are used to.

Mastercard trialled the new sensory notes on menus at some of the food vendors at the Australian Open.

I am interested to know if anyone who attended the AO this year noticed these notes and if they were helpful.

I am excited to announce that we have added an additional evening session for our Creating Social Stories for Inclusive Communities workshop.

Social stories, also commonly known as social scripts or social narratives, are documents that use pictures along with storytelling techniques to assist individuals in understanding a new environment, event or task.

Social Stories are a valuable resource for neurodivergent individuals of all ages as they allow us time to mentally prepare for what to expect and bring along what we may need to cope in the environment.

In this interactive workshop, you will have the opportunity to learn what makes an effective social story and walk away with your very own draft social story. You will also have the opportunity to seek feedback from someone with both lived and professional experience of neurodiversity.

You can learn more about this workshop and register to attend by heading to: https://www.brycepaceautismadvocate.com/creating-social-stories-online

I look forward to seeing you there!

Over the weekend, I was pleased to discover the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower feature on priority seat signs at some tram stops around Melbourne. I would like to thank Yarra Trams for recognising that not all disabilities are visible. I hope that this is only the beginning and that we begin to see the sunflower displayed on all pieces of public transport, helping to raise awareness of the meaning of the Sunflower. Please remember if you see someone wearing a sunflower lanyard, wristband or pin on public transport please offer them your seat as they may need it. In Australia, penalties do apply if you refuse to offer your seat to someone with a disability.

Yesterday Mattel introduced the world to Autistic Barbie. Yes, you read that correctly; this new doll was designed in consultation with the Autistic Self Advocacy Network (ASAN) in the US and features elbow and wrist articulation for stimming, along with flat feet, a functional fidget spinner ear defenders, and an AAC device.

Autistic Barbie also doesn't make direct eye contact and wears sensory-friendly clothing, reflecting some of the challenges that those of us on the autism spectrum face.

I would like to congratulate Mattel in asisting different communities to feel represented in the toys they play with. I also hope this is just the beginning as there is so much potential to expand to help represent the diversity of the autism spectrum.

What do you think of this new Barbie?

I'm excited to announce that Victoria University's Footscray Park Campus sensory map is now live. I would like to thank the Students, Staff and the Disability and Accessibility Services Team who contributed to the overall design of the map.

You can access the map online by heading to: https://www.vu.edu.au/current-students/advice-support/neurodivergent-student-support

As part of this project, I also had the opportunity to be a little innovative and create an adaptive sensory map. This new type of map allows parts to be adapted to reflect pop-up experiences and events happening on the campus, further improving access for neurodivergent individuals.

I look forward to our continued partnership with Victoria University, as we work to introduce sensory maps to all their Melbourne campuses.

Today is International Day Of People with Disability (IDPwD). A day where we celebrate the achievements and contributions of people with disability and promote a more inclusive and accessible world for all.

This year's theme highlights that we all need to work together in order to create accessible and inclusive communities where everyone can participate.

For the past decade, I have had the pleasure of assisting organisations and communities across Australia to understand and accommodate autistic and neurodivergent individuals. I have found though, that true change must be a collaborative effort, especially when it comes to something as diverse as disability access and inclusion.

Today I would like to encourage everyone to think about what you can do to make your community a more accessible and inclusive place for people with a disability and set yourself a goal to achieve before next year.

If you represent an organisation, service provider or University and would like to do more to accommodate neurodivergent people, feel free to contact us. You can learn more about the services we provide by heading to: https://www.brycepaceautismadvocate.com/services

Let's work together to create a world that celebrates human diversity.

Happy International Day of people with Disability!

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of presenting at the ATEND Pathways 17 conference in Brisbane. I joined the Victoria University, Melbourne Australia team to discuss how social stories and sensory maps could be used to make the University experience more accessible for neurodivergent students.

Those who attended our session also had an exclusive look at Victoria University’s new sensory maps, that the Disability & accessibility services team and I have developed.

I am excited to let you know that these maps will be publicly available soon. Keep an eye on our socials for updates.

I would like to thank Tynah and the team at Victoria University for the opportunity to work on this exciting project. I look forward to our continued partnership as we work to make all of Victoria University's campuses more accessible for neurodivergent individuals.
