Sleep Week Tip: Understanding the Stages of Sleep đ
When we think about sleep, we often imagine it as simply âbeing asleepâ⌠but your body actually moves through several important stages of sleep each night. Each stage has its own role in helping your body and mind recover.
đ Stage 1 â Light Sleep
This is the transition between being awake and asleep. Your body starts to relax, breathing slows, and brain activity begins to shift. Itâs a short stage but important for easing your body into rest.
đ¤ Stage 2 â Deeper Light Sleep
Your body temperature drops, your heart rate slows, and your brain begins preparing for deeper sleep. This stage actually makes up the largest portion of your sleep cycle and plays a key role in memory and learning
đ Stage 3 â Deep Sleep
This is the physical repair stage. Your body restores muscles, strengthens your immune system, and releases growth hormones. If youâve ever woken up feeling groggy after being woken suddenly, you were likely in deep sleep.
⨠REM Sleep â Dream Sleep
REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep is where most dreaming occurs. Your brain is highly active during this stage and it plays an essential role in processing emotions, creativity, and memory.
Throughout the night your body cycles through these stages 4â6 times. Each stage is important, and when sleep is shortened or disrupted, your body often misses out on the deeper and REM stages where the real restoration happens.
Thatâs why chronic sleep deprivation can affect mood, concentration, immune health, and energy levels.
