Physiotherapist or Exercise Physiologist — what’s the difference?

Physio often focuses on injury diagnosis and early rehabilitation.

Exercise Physiology focuses on structured strength progression, balance retraining and long-term independence.

You may benefit from Exercise Physiology if you:
✔ Feel unsteady
✔ Have arthritis or osteoporosis
✔ Want supervised strength progression
✔ Have a Medicare Chronic Disease Management plan from your GP

Sage Active Clinic supports adults 50+ in Brighton VIC.
Exercise is the treatment.

If you’ve felt unsteady recently, this is often where we begin.

Supported marching strengthens the hip flexors and improves single-leg stability — two key components in reducing fall risk.

As balance improves, support is gradually reduced in a structured way.

Progression should always be assessed and supervised.

The scales don’t always reflect what’s really happening in your body.

At Sage Active Clinic, we use InBody body composition scans to measure things that matter, including muscle mass, body fat and how your body is changing over time.

This information helps our Exercise Physiologists:
• track progress accurately
• guide safe, effective exercise programs
• support strength, balance and independence as we age

For many people, especially over 50, progress is about maintaining muscle and function, not chasing a number on the scales.

Why fear of falling affects movement

Fear of falling doesn’t just increase anxiety – it can quietly change how people move.

Research shows that when people are worried about falling, they often:
• move more stiffly
• reduce walking speed
• avoid everyday activities

Over time, this protective behaviour can reduce strength, balance and confidence, which may actually increase fall risk.

Exercise Physiologists work with people to rebuild confidence through safe, supported movement and gradual exposure to everyday tasks.

Small, appropriate exercise can make a meaningful difference to independence and safety.

Many grandparents are more involved than ever in caring for their grandchildren.

That means staying strong enough to lift, walk, balance and keep up — safely and confidently.

Exercise physiology focuses on maintaining the strength, balance and mobility that support everyday life.

Because staying active helps you keep doing the things that matter most.

Muscle mass and independence

Research consistently shows that low muscle mass and strength increase the risk of losing independence as we age.

What matters most isn’t muscle size alone, but the combination of:

* muscle mass
* muscle strength
* functional ability (such as walking speed or standing from a chair)

Together, these factors are strong predictors of whether someone can live independently and safely.

Exercise Physiologists assess both body composition and functional strength to build a clearer picture of risk and guide appropriate exercise programs.

Staying strong isn’t about training harder — it’s about training appropriately.
