Within a lifetime 60-80% of adults will have suffered back pain at one point or another. Stretching the soft tissues in the back, legs and buttock such as the hamstrings, erector muscles of the spine and hip flexor muscles, can help! An increase in the range of motion of the spine has been shown to improve back pain. For the first 4-6 weeks of a back pain flare up, you should avoid doing any strenous activity until inflammation settles. Gentle stretches such as knee rocks, as well as isometric abdominal strength exercises are recommended at the start of rehabilitation. Back and core strength exercises should then be done 2-3 times a week to build resilience in the back.

The kettlebell goblet squat's benefits include improved squat mechanics, as the kettlebell acts as a counterbalance, promoting an upright torso and neutral spine. It builds full-body strength (quads, glutes, core) and enhances mobility in the hips and ankles, allowing for deeper squats. The exercise is also great for beginners, as it helps with proper form, and if you pause at the bottom, it is a great mobility exercise for your hips.

Are you exercising for your brain?

Research has shown that being physically active after the age of 65 reduces your risk of developing dementia by up to 20%. Exercise supports increased blood flow and oxygen supply to the brain and stimulates the growth of new brain cells. Aside from benefits to your grey matter, exercise also reduces risk of falls, and can help improve sleep; further improving your mental wellbeing. Start with a few minutes a day of either aerobic exercise, weight training or flexibility/balance exercises, and build up to 30 minutes a day.
