Good SIL vs Bad SIL – How To Spot The Difference Quickly

Not all Supported Independent Living (SIL) homes are the same.

When your loved one needs nursing care with compassion, the right home makes all the difference.

✨ Signs of a GOOD SIL home

• Warm, respectful staff who know each person by name and listen to them

• Clean, calm environment – no strong smells, no shouting, no chaos

• Participants are involved in everyday choices: meals, activities, routines

• Medication, health needs and behavior support are well documented and followed

• Families and support coordinators are welcomed, not pushed away

• Clear house rules that protect safety, privacy and dignity

• Staff are trained in complex care, mental health and positive behavior support

⚠️ Red flags of a BAD SIL home

• You see or hear staff speaking harshly, ignoring call bells, or rushing people

• The house looks unkempt: dirty bathrooms, overflowing bins, poor food hygiene

• Participants look bored, isolated, or fearful – spending all day in bedrooms or in front of the TV

• No clear care plans, no notes about health changes, missed appointments

• Visitors are discouraged, questions are brushed off, “that’s just how we do it here”

• High staff turnover, lots of agency staff who don’t know residents’ needs

• Complaints are dismissed or there is no clear complaints process

⏱️ How to tell quickly if a SIL home is right for you

On your first visit, ask yourself:

Would I be happy for someone I love to live here?

Do staff talk to participants, or just about them?

Is there a calm, homely feel – or tension and chaos?

Are care plans, medication charts and house rules easy to see and explained clearly?

If the answer is “no” to these questions, trust your instinct and keep looking.

💚 At NCC our Homes are run on:

• Compassion and dignity

• Safe, clean and well-run SIL homes

• Individualized care plans and clinical oversight

• Open communication with families and support coordinators

Funny how the same letters in a word mean very different things.

Compliance isn’t paperwork – it’s people work.

When we take compliance seriously, we are really saying:

✅ Our staff are trained, supported and clear on their roles.

✅ Our homes are safe, consistent and well‑managed.

✅ Our participants are protected, heard and empowered.

Good compliance = confident staff.

Confident staff = calm, predictable, safe homes.

Safe homes = better outcomes, more choice and control, and real quality of life for the people we support.

If we cut corners on policies, training, incident reporting or documentation, we’re not just risking an audit finding – we’re risking someone’s safety and dignity.

At our core, we use compliance to:

Build a culture of accountability, not blame

Make sure every shift looks like the care we promised in the care plan

Learn from incidents and feedback so we keep improving

Strong compliance builds strong teams.

Strong teams build safe homes.

Safe homes create great outcomes.

That’s the standard we’re choosing, every day.

NCC wants secure and happy NDIS homes because that’s the foundation for everything else we’re trying to achieve with participants

1. Safety = Trust
If a home isn’t secure, nothing else works.

Families need to know their loved one is physically safe (locks, emergency plans, trained staff).
Participants need to feel emotionally safe (no bullying, respectful staff, clear routines).
Support coordinators and guardians will only refer to providers they can trust to keep people safe.
When safety is strong, everyone relaxes and trust grows.

2. Happiness = Real Quality of Life
NDIS is not just about “keeping people alive” – it’s about:

Enjoying daily life.
Having friends and meaningful activities.
Feeling respected and heard.
NCC wants homes where participants:

Laugh, socialize, and feel at home, not in an institution.
Make choices about meals, activities, and routines.
Feel proud to invite family and friends to visit.
Happy homes lead to better mental health, fewer incidents, and more progress towards goals.

3. Stability Helps Participants Reach Their Goals
A secure, happy home environment makes it easier for participants to:

Build daily living skills (cooking, cleaning, budgeting).
Learn to self‑advocate and make decisions.
Engage in community activities, work, or study.
If a house is chaotic or unsafe, staff spend all their time “putting out fires” instead of building skills. NCC wants the opposite: calm, predictable, supportive homes where people can grow.

4. It’s What the NDIS (and Auditors) Expect
NCC understands that:

NDIS Practice Standards require safe environments, risk management, and participant rights.
Auditors look for:
Clear policies.
Incident management.
WHS systems.
Individual risk and behavior support plans.
Secure, well‑run homes mean:

Better audit outcomes.
Fewer complaints.
Stronger reputation with support coordinators, plan managers, and the NDIA.
5. It Reflects NCC’s Values
NCC wants to be known as a provider that:

Treats participants like family, not numbers.
Prioritizes dignity, respect, and choice.
Cares about staff wellbeing, because supported staff create supportive homes.
Secure and happy homes are the most visible expression of NCC’s values and mission.

6. It’s Good for Everyone: Participants, Families, Staff, and the Business
Participants: Feel safe, settled, and in control of their lives.
Families: Sleep better knowing their loved one is cared for.
Staff: Work in a positive, structured environment, with less burnout and turnover.
Business: Better occupancy, stronger referrals, and long‑term sustainability.

🩺💬 Why Testimonials Matter in the NDIS Space

At Nursing Care with Compassion, we believe our participants and families as well as staff, are the best people to describe the quality of our support.

Testimonials are more than “nice comments” – they are:

✅ Evidence of Outcomes

Show how our nursing care has improved a person’s health, safety, independence or quality of life.

Highlight real changes: fewer hospital admissions, better medication management, more confidence at home, improved wound healing, etc.

Help future participants understand what support looks like in everyday life.

✅ Trust & Transparency in the NDIS Space

New participants, support coordinators and referrers want to see proof that we do what we say.

Genuine reviews build confidence that our services are safe, respectful and person‑centered.

They help people choose providers who truly listen and respond to their needs.

✅ Supporting NDIS Compliance

Testimonials can support our obligations under the NDIS Practice Standards by showing that:

Participants are involved in decisions about their care.

We monitor and review outcomes, not just provide tasks.

We act on feedback and complaints to continuously improve.

We deliver services that are effective, safe, and responsive to individual needs.

Every time someone shares their experience with Nursing Care with Compassion (with consent), it becomes part of our quality evidence – something auditors and the NDIS Commission look for when assessing safe, high‑quality services.

🌟 Have we supported you or your loved one?

We’d be grateful if you shared your experience. Your feedback helps us:

Improve our nursing services

Show new participants what compassionate care truly looks like

Demonstrate our ongoing commitment to NDIS quality and safety

📩 Message us or email your testimonial to: tich@nccsupport.com.au

(We will always respect your privacy and obtain consent before sharing.)

Are you an unregistered NDIS provider worried about registration, audits, compliance and rising business costs?

With recent NDIS reforms, all providers delivering Supported Independent Living (SIL) will be required to be NDIS registered by June 2026. This means unregistered providers who currently support participants in SIL arrangements may no longer be able to deliver or claim for those supports unless they:

Go through full NDIS registration (including audits, policies, governance, clinical oversight, etc.), or
Deliver services under a registered provider’s umbrella.
If you’re concerned about the cost, time and complexity of registering on your own, Nursing Care with Compassion (NCC) is looking to team up with unregistered providers like you.

What this NDIS change means for unregistered SIL providers
From June 2026, if you provide (or want to provide) SIL-type supports and you are not registered:

You may no longer be able to deliver SIL supports directly to participants.
Support Coordinators and participants will be steered toward registered SIL providers, reducing your referrals and income.
You may lose existing SIL participants if you cannot transition into a compliant model.
You will need to either register (and fund audits, policies, systems, governance) or partner with a registered provider to keep working in SIL.
Partnering with NCC gives you a practical pathway to keep supporting participants without carrying the full registration burden yourself.

What Nursing Care with Compassion (NCC) will do for you
Act as the registered NDIS provider umbrella for SIL and other registered supports.
Manage NDIS compliance, audits, reporting, and policy frameworks on your behalf.
Provide clinical governance and risk management, especially for complex or high‑intensity supports.
Support with NDIS claims, invoicing, and documentation so your billing is correct and compliant.
Offer training, supervision, and mentoring so your practice aligns with NDIS Practice Standards.
Benefits & outcomes for you (unregistered provider)
Keep working with NDIS participants in SIL under NCC’s registration instead of exiting the market in 2026.
Avoid the full cost and stress of registering alone (audits, policies, systems, ongoing compliance).
Access to ready-made systems, forms, and procedures aligned with NDIS requirements.
More time to focus on participant care, less time on paperwork and governance.
Potential to grow your client base through NCC referrals and joint marketing.
Benefits & outcomes for participants
Continued access to their trusted support workers under a compliant, registered framework.
Services delivered under NDIS Practice Standards and Code of Conduct.
Clear service agreements, incident management, complaints processes, and safeguards.
Greater confidence that their SIL supports will meet future NDIS requirements beyond June 2026.
Benefits & outcomes for NCC
A broader, flexible network of skilled frontline workers and partners.
Ability to support more participants safely across different locations and needs.
Stronger service offering through collaborative, well‑supported partnerships.
Don’t wait for June 2026 to force a decision.
If you’re an unregistered provider delivering—or wanting to deliver—SIL or complex supports, now is the time to explore partnership options.

Enquire today to find out exactly how the NCC partnership model works, what’s expected from you, and how quickly you can transition your participants into a compliant, future‑proof structure.

Nursing Care with Compassion (NCC) wants to partner with independent support workers, not replace them.

How we work together

The participant keeps their trusted support worker.
NCC provides the structure: policies, clinical governance, incident management, documentation, rostering, and payroll.
The independent worker becomes part of the NCC care team and joins planning, reviews, and communication with families and Support Coordinators.
Benefits for the support worker

Professional backing, clear role, fair pay, and less admin.
Access to training, supervision, and clinical guidance.
Stronger credibility with Support Coordinators and other providers.
Benefits for the participant

Continuity with the worker they know and trust.
Safer, more consistent support under NDIS standards.
Better documentation and coordination, which supports funding and plan reviews.
Stronger support around housing and transitions (SIL, SDA, ILO, STA/MTA).
Best outcomes & moving forward

Stable housing, fewer crises, and real progress toward goals.
Valued, well‑supported workers.
NCC and the NDIS can show quality, safety, and value for money.
Next steps: meet, onboard the worker into NCC systems, create a transition plan for the participant, review after the first 8–12 weeks, then continue collaborating long term.

At Nursing Care With Compassion we always say:

“Yes, we have capacity.”

This isn’t a slogan – it’s how we operate as an NDIS provider.

We roster ahead and keep a buffer of experienced NDIS support workers.

We offer flexible supports (in-home, community access, and skill-building), so we can respond quickly without cancelling existing participants.

We focus on participant goals and continuity of care, not just filling shifts.

That’s how we can confidently tell participants, families, and support coordinators:

We have capacity, and we have the right support worker to help you reach your NDIS goals.

14/01/2026

From 1 July 2026, all SIL providers must be registered with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission. Participants aren’t registered – providers are – but participants will only be able to get SIL from registered providers.
What this means for the market:

Higher bar to enter and stay in SIL:
Small, informal or low‑compliance providers will struggle unless they partner with a registered provider or invest heavily in compliance.
Market consolidation:
Fewer, more structured SIL providers; many independents and micro‑providers will need to sit under a registered provider.
More oversight and safety:
Clearer accountability for incidents, restrictive practices, medication, and worker screening. In theory, this improves safety and quality for participants.
Who “wins”?

Participants:
Likely better safeguards, more consistent standards, and clearer responsibility if something goes wrong. Risk: slightly less choice if small providers exit.
Registered SIL providers who are well‑run:
They gain market share as unregistered providers exit or partner with them. Those with strong governance and systems are best placed.
Independent support workers (if they adapt):
They lose if they stay informal and outside registration.
They win if they:
Partner with a registered SIL provider ( Recommended for Independent Support Workers)
Keep their participant relationships,
Gain better rates, stable rosters, and full compliance/insurance support.
Bottom line:
This reform is designed to lift standards and accountability in SIL. The winners are compliant, well‑governed SIL providers and independent workers who align with them; the losers are informal, non‑compliant arrangements that can’t meet the new bar. ( This thetheory and will only work when everyone becomes accountable and this will not happen unless they are registered which is the starting point)

Supporting Participants to Manage Their Funding with Care and Confidence

At Nursing Care with Compassion (NCC Support), every participant’s journey matters. In today’s challenging environment, managing NDIS funding effectively is more important than ever. Our team is dedicated to helping participants understand, plan, and utilise their funding in ways that truly meet their goals and needs.

How NCC Support Helps Participants Manage Their Funding

Personalised Budget Guidance: Each participant receives one-on-one support to understand their plan, ensuring funds are allocated appropriately across core, capacity-building, and capital supports.

Transparent Tracking: Regular reviews help participants stay informed about their spending, preventing overspending or underutilisation of funds.

Comprehensive Reporting: We prepare detailed, evidence-based reports that clearly demonstrate progress, outcomes, and the ongoing need for current funding levels. These reports are designed to support plan reviews and justify continued or increased funding where appropriate.

What Other Measures we are taking

Across our teams and business, we are up skilling and adapting to ensure participants continue receiving quality care and support despite funding pressures. Common strategies include:

Offering financial literacy workshops to help participants/staff better understand their NDIS budgets.

Implementing digital tracking tools for real-time budget monitoring.

Providing goal-focused progress reports that highlight measurable outcomes.

Strengthening collaboration with support coordinators and plan managers to ensure funding is used efficiently and effectively.

At NCC Support, the focus remains on compassion, transparency, and empowerment. By combining personalised care with strong financial management, participants can continue achieving their goals with confidence and stability.
