What’s an initial appointment look like?

This can vary dependant on your injury or performance goals.

Here’s an example of a young man with ongoing lower back and hamstring pain

At 30 seconds in - note how much this young athlete relies on her non-dominant (Reconstructed) leg with this reactionary drill

(For reference: dominant leg here would mean the leg that the athlete would uses to kick with)

This can be an issue when the athlete uses their non-dominant leg to change direction when cutting TOWARDS the direction of the non-dominant leg

For example - the athlete has to quickly react cut left turn left - rather than punch with the right leg to go left, she will plant the left leg and use it to move to her left

This didn’t happen in this example - but you can see at about 30 seconds in, she does use her right leg once when she was really forced to…

However with every other direction change, she’ll go out of her way (subconsciously) to not use her dominant leg

Why? Likely this has been her lifelong change of direction pattern which is ingrained her in motor system

A common approach to tackle this during ACL rehab is to train them out of it. Have the athlete be comfortable planting and changing direction with the opposite leg so they will automatically do it on the court

Recently revamped our young adolescent ACL rehab protocols

It took some time, but made the overall exercise complexity and exit criteria for each phase a lot more attainable for our young adolescent athletes, allowing a lot smoother progression through the protocols

Some very simple exercises here, which is how it should be for 13/14 yrs olds going through a rehab phase

This young man killing it 💪
