Mateship is at the heart of everything we do at Brothers.

It’s about standing side by side, showing up consistently, and treating each other as equals. It’s built through trust, shared experiences, and knowing someone genuinely has your back, not just on the good days, but every day.

At Brothers, mateship means support that feels natural, respectful, and real. It’s the foundation of the relationships we build and the reason our community continues to grow stronger.

Life is so much better when you don’t have to do it alone.

At Brothers, support is built on trust, respect, and genuine connection. It’s about walking alongside someone, listening, encouraging, and being present, day in and day out.

Moments like this reflect what we create: relationships where people feel safe, supported, and confident knowing they’re not facing life on their own.
Because having someone who truly has your back changes everything, especially when its a Brother.

SIL Houses Projects

At our Brothers SIL houses, everyday moments become opportunities for growth.

Woodworking projects like this support more than just practical skills, they build confidence, routine, and a sense of achievement. With the right environment and support, participants are able to take their time, learn safely, and enjoy the process of creating something themselves.

Our SIL homes are spaces where independence is encouraged, strengths are nurtured, and people are supported to live life in a way that feels meaningful to them.

Brothers Cooking Classes | Week 4

Week 4 - Final cooking class for our new chefs.

Our fourth and final cooking class wrapped up this week, and it was a fantastic way to finish the program.

From the moment the session started, the room was full of jokes, laughter, and relaxed conversation. The confidence and connection between participants was clear, something that has grown steadily over the past four weeks.

What We Made

• Frittata
• Toad in the Hole
• Shakshuka
• Pancakes
• Potato rösti

What Stood Out

Knife skills and overall confidence in the kitchen were night and day compared to the first session. Participants shopped independently, made decisions about what they wanted to cook, and took real ownership over the process.

Participants were given a shopping list with a guide price and made independent choices about what to buy and how to prepare it.

Engagement was high throughout.

Although there was some hesitation around making pancake batter from scratch, each participant mixed their own batter after a quick demonstration and cooked their pancakes with only minimal supervision. Seeing that confidence build in real time was a highlight of the day.

One participant took the lead cooking the potato rösti while others prepared their batter, showing great teamwork and time management. The frittata was enjoyed throughout the session, and the shakshuka, initially outside a couple of participants’ comfort zones ended up being a pleasant surprise. Despite one participant not liking cooked tomato and another avoiding raw tomato, both tried the dish and enjoyed it, showing a real willingness to step outside familiar food choices.

Final Reflection

As this was the final class, it was incredibly rewarding to see how far everyone had come.

In just four sessions, participants went from limited cooking confidence to talking about cooking more at home and asking when the classes would continue.

The only downside? That the program had to end!!

Brothers Cooking Classes | Week 3

Week 3 - Kitchen confidence, independence and connection.

Week three continued to build strong momentum across the group, with growing confidence, independence, and connection. This session was our most cost-effective so far (around $28) and showed the highest level of participant independence to date, with support workers able to step back and let participants lead.

What we cooked
• Berry coulis, compote and jam (using leftover berries from the previous week)
• Overnight oats and oat flour
• Chicken wraps
• Muesli bars

This week focused on learning how simple ingredients can be transformed in different ways. Using the same berries to create three different outcomes reinforced that cooking doesn’t need to be complicated to be creative.

Participant engagement increased noticeably. Knife skills showed a significant improvement, with participants safely preparing chicken and salads with little to no assistance. Support workers were able to step back almost completely, offering guidance only when needed a big milestone.

It was also great to see friendships forming naturally. Two participants who experienced some tension last week worked together on the muesli bars, sharing laughs and inside jokes throughout the task. They were so engaged the mixture cooled before it could be pressed a great sign of genuine enjoyment and teamwork.

Looking ahead
The final session will be “Breakfast for Dinner”, featuring egg-based meals and hash browns, chosen collaboratively after one participant wasn’t sure what they wanted to cook.

Key takeaway
By allowing participants to work through challenges respectfully and independently, confidence and trust within the group continues to grow.

Participants commented on how easy and enjoyable the meals were, helping remove barriers to cooking at home.

One participant has already committed to making overnight oats and muesli bars each week to support healthier breakfasts, a strong example of skills transferring beyond the class.

Today we recognise World Braille Day, a day that highlights the importance of Braille in empowering people who are blind or have low vision to access information, education, and independence.

Braille is more than a system of reading and writing it represents inclusion, accessibility, and equal opportunity. It plays a vital role in enabling people to participate fully in their communities and live with confidence and dignity.

At Brothers Support Network, we’re committed to supporting inclusive communities where everyone has access to the tools, resources, and support they need to thrive.

Weekly Wrap

This week was all about getting out, following passions, and enjoying the simple things together.

From a special visit to the Brisbane Lions AFL ground supporting one of our participants to connect with his love of footy and see his team’s home base, to bowling, beachside hangs, and everything in between, it’s been a week full of meaning and fun.

Supporting people to explore what they love, revisit interests, and feel genuinely seen is a big part of what we do. When support is built around personal passions, confidence grows and experiences become even more powerful.

These shared moments whether big adventures or relaxed catch-ups are what make everyday life richer.

Life really is good when you’ve got a Brother by your side. 💙

Brothers Cooking Classes | Week 2

Week Two – Independence & Growth
Week two built beautifully on the foundations set in week one, with participants arriving ready to plan, shop, and cook with confidence.

The group planned their meals in advance, headed out shopping together, and used a list to navigate the store. Tasks were divided, items scanned independently and the group came in 60 cents under budget, a huge win for teamwork and independence.

What We Made
• Chicken satay stir fry
• Smoothies

Knife skills and safety were the main focus. Brothers confidently supported participants under guidance, and learning flowed both ways. A simple rice-cooking technique was shared — something even some Brothers hadn’t encountered before.

Challenges
A brief disagreement around portion sizes was resolved naturally through group discussion. Without prompting, participants ensured everyone had enough demonstrating fairness and inclusion.

Overall Reflection
These cooking classes are about more than food. They create a space where participants feel safe to try, learn, and succeed alongside their Brothers. Through mateship, passion, a growth mindset, and humility, participants are building life skills while strengthening relationships and confidence. We’re excited to see where the remaining sessions lead.
