Your menstrual cycle is more than just your period. It is a rhythm of hormonal shifts and structural changes in the uterus and ovaries.

In this post, we break down what is happening hormonally and what we see on ultrasound at each stage (in ‘typical’ normal menstrual cycle’:

Menstrual phase
Hormones fall.
Ultrasound: a thin endometrium as the lining sheds.

Follicular phase
Oestrogen rises and follicles grow.
Ultrasound: developing ovarian follicles and a thickening, trilaminar endometrium.

Ovulation
LH surges.
Ultrasound: a dominant follicle releases the egg, sometimes with a small amount of pelvic fluid visible.

Luteal phase
Progesterone rises.
Ultrasound: a corpus luteum forms and the endometrium becomes more secretory and ready for implantation.

Hormones drive the changes. Ultrasound lets us see them.

Just look at that face… pure contentment. A tiny human, completely at ease, floating in their own little world. It is moments like this that remind us how special pregnancy really is.

If this little one is anything to go by, we are taking this as our official reminder to slow down, breathe deeply and head into the weekend feeling just as relaxed.

That brightly colored ‘vascular’ ring you might see in an o***y on an early pregnancy or gynaecology scan is often the corpus luteum.

On ultrasound it can appear as a round or oval structure in the o***y, sometimes with thicker walls and increased blood flow around the edges (also called peripheral vascularity). This is completely normal physiology, not a problem or a cyst to worry about.

This image was captured from a 3D volume, allowing us to gently rotate and manipulate the data to view the fetus from different angles. It’s an incredible way to appreciate just how perfectly they’re positioned at this stage.

Meet Allison! 👋
We’re excited to introduce Allison, one of our Team leaders for our newly opened Toowoomba practice!

Allison is a highly experienced sonographer with 16 years of clinical scanning experience. She is currently a Masters candidate completing research on the topic of endometriosis, reflecting her strong commitment to advancing women’s health and delivering evidence-based care.

She is deeply passionate about expanding access to high-quality tertiary obstetric and gynaecological ultrasound for patients living in regional and rural areas. She says joining the team at QUFW was an obvious choice for her.
“I am excited to offer a tertiary service to our patients, some of who travel several hours to see us. It reduces the burden to families when they don’t have to travel to metro centers for their obstetric and gynaecology ultrasound services.

Since joining our team in late 2025, Allison says the best part of her job is having access to state of the art ultrasound machines and the opportunity to scan patients from the start to the end of their pregnancies.

When she’s off duty, Allison is an avid social media ultrasound educator and football mum. “I have two young boys to whom football is life!”

We are thrilled to have Allison join our team at QUFW.

👋🏼 Just a quick reminder to our QUFW community - All of our sites (Brisbane, Southport, Tugun, Ipswich, and Toowoomba) are closed this coming Monday (26th Jan) for the Public Holiday.

All sites will reopen as usual on Tuesday.

The fetal heartbeat is often the first thing we check during each scan here at QUFW. It can give parents that reassurance before any further assessments.

But did you know that the “normal” range is actually much wider than most people think? Fetal heart rates can also change quite a bit throughout pregnancy and gestation.
