Easter Chocolate!
We get many parents asking how to manage the chocolate surplus on Easter Sunday and after Easter weekend has past.
It’s not an easy answer and one that does involve knowing your child, whether they are neuro-typical or not, the food they eat and the food environment they are exposed to each day.
For most neuro-typical kids, we’d recommend letting them enjoy Easter Day with a reminder about fuelling their body with everyday foods alongside eating the chocolate. Supporting them by preparing healthy main meals can make this easier for them.
After Easter, you can then support them to finish the chocolate off in a slow and steady manner, for example swapping a chocolate egg for a usual sweet food eaten, whilst continuing to enjoy fruit and veggies and whole grains.
It’s not about what you eat for a week but over the long term and supporting kids to learn how to enjoy things like chocolate as part of healthy eating, especially when they can arrive en masse is key to long term healthy relationships with food.
