📢 Today We Spoke Out About a Critical Issue Affecting Coast Residents
This afternoon, Kel & Co. Care joined Nicklin MP Marty Hunt outside Nambour General Hospital to raise urgent concerns about the growing number of Sunshine Coast residents who are stuck in hospital simply because the supports they need at home aren’t being approved in time.
As highlighted in today’s Courier Mail article, 74 patients on the Sunshine Coast are medically ready to leave hospital, but can’t, due to severe delays in Home Care Package approvals and NDIS funding decisions.
This is not just a statistic:
➡️ These are older Australians waiting for basic home care.
➡️ These are NDIS participants who cannot return home safely without support.
➡️ These are families under immense pressure, and hospital beds that could be available for acute patients.
Our Operations Manager, Nicky, spoke with the media today about what we are seeing on the ground every single week:
• People stabilised and medically cleared, but unable to be discharged because essential care arrangements aren’t funded in time
• Participants discharged without adequate supports, only to decline and be re-admitted
• Families left without guidance while aged care and disability systems take months to process the evidence already submitted
• A system that is forcing hospitals to carry the load for federally-funded programs
Nicky also proposed a collaborative solution, calling for a dedicated assessment pathway between My Aged Care, NDIS and Queensland Health to fast-track bridging supports — a practical step that would allow people to return home safely and free up desperately needed hospital beds.
At Kel & Co. Care, we see these delays firsthand every day. The impact on participants, families and frontline staff is immense — and it’s clear that change is urgently needed.
We are proud to stand alongside our local MP to advocate for the people we support.
Because everyone deserves access to timely care, dignity, and the chance to return home safely.
