The lack of mobility in the ankle causes your knee pain as it tries to bear more of the load.

Knee pain can stem from a stiffness or tightness in your ankles.
If you have tried to squat and notice you are raising your ankles

practicing the chair pose and have your weight on your toes

running downhill and have knee pain

…you are overcompensating for a lack in ankle mobility. Limitations in ankle mobility can cause a functional and athletic limitations leading to knee pain.

How should ankle move?

front/back (sagittal plane): plantarflexion (flexing your foot) and dorsiflexion (pointing your foot)
side to side (frontal plane): like saying no with your foot
rotation (transverse plane): making circles in the air with your toes

We are going to talk about one of my favourite topic Balance.

Balance is the ability to control your body's position, whether stationary (i.e. a complex yoga pose) or while moving (e.g. skiing). Balance is a key component of fitness, along with strength, endurance, and flexibility. There are various ways to perform balance exercises.

At KENMORE VILLAGE PHYSIO, Our balance classes offer ways to challenge and develop your balance in safest way.

Balance training involves doing exercises that strengthen the muscles that help keep you upright, including your legs and core. These kinds of exercises can improve stability and help prevent falls.

To be able to see difference, attend 1 hr class at least for 16 weeks and plus some balance work at home in safe environment

Osteoarthritis of Knee

our knee joint is where your thigh bone (femur) meets your shin bone (tibia). This is the largest joint of the body and is strong enough to hold our entire body weight. The joint is capable of taking significant forces under load when twisting and turning during day to day activities. At the end of each bone we have a type of cartilage known as hyaline cartilage.
The 'tear' component of arthritis refers to small defecits that occur in this special lining exposing the underlying bone. People often think that age is the biggest factor in development of these defecits however this is incorrect! The problem is much more multifactorial than that.

In my next POST, I will talk about what to do in case of OA of knee. There are lots of options available to manage OA.

Osteoarthritis is a long term condition- it usually develops and evolves very slowly.

From time to time people with osteoarthritis can experience flare up of their symptoms and may require additional help or treatment at these times to setle things back down.
