General information

ASD&D is a socially interactive program that encourages people of all ages with ASD to be creative, co-operative and patient by participating in a classic table-top role-playing game. Roleplaying games stimulate the imagination through thought provoking co-operative story telling, confronting challenges and puzzles, and overcoming perilous encounters. Set against a backdrop of medieval magical fantasy, ASD&D games utilize a modified version of the Dungeons and Dragons game so that our players can express themselves through their epic hero without the clutter of the game's full system. Since it's conception in 1977, Dungeons and Dragons has encouraged co-operation within both a social setting and within the bounds of the game. Presented with a variety of challenges from fierce beasts, dangerous dungeons, and powerful magic, players are encouraged to work together to overcome challenges presented by the Game Master (or GM). Dungeons and Dragons, and other table-top role-playing games, are not only a way to escape reality and take on the persona of the hero of a story, but they also build a range of social, intellectual and creative skills. Since the early 00's, therapeutic studies have shown an overwhelmingly positive effect of Role-playing games on young persons with ASD. ASD&D aims to encourage the development of these skills through structured two-hour game sessions that guide players to engage with each other cooperatively and maintain focus at the table.
