Happy Birthday to us! How far we have come 🩷

Five years.
Five years of walking alongside people and families.
Five years of seeing children, teenagers, young adults and adults grow in confidence and capacity.
Five years of learning, adapting, laughing, problem solving and celebrating every tiny step, every success.
Being there for the good moments and the hardest of moments.

Today is HWOT’s fifth birthday.

When Helen first started this practice, she imagined a space where individuals felt safe, where therapy felt like collaboration rather than pressure, and where clinicians were encouraged to be creative and deeply human in the way they work. What has grown from that vision is more than just a practice. It has become a community.

To every person and every family who has welcomed us into their homes, schools, workplaces and lives, thank you. Your trust in us is never taken for granted.

To the remarkable children, teens, young adults and adults we support, thank you for teaching us courage, resilience and joy. You remind us daily that progress is not linear, and that every small win matters. You remind us how to be brave.

To every single one of our past and present staff, thank you for the heart and absolute dedication you bring and brought to your work. Helen Walker OT exists because of the passion and care you show every day, and we are forever thankful.

To our allied health colleagues, support coordinators, teachers, case managers, childcare, doctors, schools, workplaces, community organisations and professional partners - thank you all for the collaboration, the referrals, the connections, the shared ideas, the support in the successes and the stresses....and the problem solving together. We are grateful for the relationships and the knowledge we exchange with you.

Five years ago this was just an idea on a page. And Helen struggling for an organisation name ☺️.
Today it is a community woven together by trust, partnership and care.

Thank you for being part of the HWOT story!
Here’s to more walking alongside you to help you Do, Be, Become and Belong. 🩷🎂🌈

Principal OT Helen was fan-girling BIG TIME with the amazing Dr Ross Greene yesterday!

If you work with kids with behaviours of concern, if you haven't heard of this man then you need to.

The GURU author of the amazing book The Explosive Child has long quoted:

'Kids do well if they can'

Not depending on motivation, not on manipulation! WHEN they can. Ain't that the truth! Preach Dr Greene 🙌🙌.

Helen attended training in the Collaborative and Proactive Solutions model and strategies. Where the key concept is that concerning behaviour is a child's way of communicating that they do not have the skills to meet an expectation.

We can take this and run with many of our adult population too.

Love love love this work 🩷💚🩵.

Feel free to ask OT Helen more on her visits and check out the great (FREE) resources on Dr Greene's website Lives in the Balance:

To finish an incredible OT Week, we swapped therapy tools for paintbrushes and went full Frida Kahlo. And got to our very heart of Doing, Being in the flow and Connection.

Our team braved a huge storm to get to Soirée in Bulimba for a paint and sip afternoon with a brilliant group of OTs. We were joined by Bayside OT and independent OTs Hannah Parsons, Britt Watson and Sarah Buchanan, alongside Brittany Wort from The Physiology Collective.

When a room full of OTs get together on a stormy Saturday, you can bet on connection, colour and a lot of laughter.

Instead of guiding clients to explore creativity and expression, we painted for ourselves. Frida was the inspiration....and the exceptionally patient teacher! Some of our masterpieces were surprisingly accurate. Some were very abstract. Every single one had personality.

Helen spoiled us with beautiful OT Week cupcakes and we got to focus on joy and connection. It was doing something just because it fills you up, to be in the moment, to experience a shift in how we feel.

A perfect reminder of what our profession is all about - Doing. Being. Becoming. Belonging.

To our clients, families, parents, carers, schools, community partners and fellow allied health professionals, thank you for celebrating OT Week with us.

Thank you for your trust, your collaboration and for allowing us to be part of your world.

Here is to a week of celebrating meaningful occupation.
Here is to paint on our hands instead of paperwork.
Here is to doing what we love.

Turning the impossible into the possible, one step at a time.

Every achievement matters - whether it’s a child taking their first independent drink from a cup, being able to engage in the classroom, an adult starting their first job, finding a new interest, or learning a new daily skill.

This OT Week, we’re celebrating all of the children, young people and adults that we support, who show us what determination, courage, and resilience really look like.

Progress in occupational therapy isn’t about perfection - it’s about participation, empowerment, confidence, and connection.

We’re honoured to walk alongside our clients and their families as they grow, learn, and achieve in their own unique ways. 🩷

As OTs we certainly love a good theme....Halloween it is!

Such an amazing (and fun!) way to build in work on fine motor skills, bilateral coordination (use of 2 hands together), planning and sequencing....and of course opportunities for some sensory exploration!

Ahhh FEELING the OT love this week 🤗.

A huge thank you for the beautiful gift from a fabulous client and his family this week (and totally AH-MAZING colouring between the lines by the way 🙌🙌💪).

It is always such an honour and a pleasure to walk alongside clients and their families. So thank you back for welcoming us into your lives and your homes (and your Kindy!) and sharing in this amazing empowering profession and impact that is Occupational Therapy.

And thank you as always for supporting our sessions and joint Prep planning meetings with clients, educators, OTs and Speechies yesterday 🩷💚🩵.

Independence looks different for everyone.

Our newsfeed is often filled with our younger clients - but did you know that our OTs also help adults and older Australians stay safe, confident, and connected?

Whether that’s recommending aids and adaptations, suggestions to alter a structural or sensory environment, suggesting modifications to a task or supporting our clients to learn and develop skills and interests.

Our OTs support people of all ages and abilities to engage in activities (i.e. their occupations) that they find meaningful. They see our clients as 'whole' people (with a body, a mind, a soul and a spirit) - and get to support you to Do, to Be, to Become and to Belong.

It's about living fully, your way 🌈.

🩷OT week - OT In action highlight 🩷

Yesterday Director Helen and Social Worker Bec had the privilege of spending time with the Not Just Bendy Physiotherapy team, sharing what Occupational Therapy and Social Work really look like when supporting people with Hypermobility Spectrum disorders, Ehlers Danlos Syndromes, and complex health conditions.

Not Just Bendy are a Physio service and respected 'Go To' source of knowledge for supporting clients with hypermobility.

We spoke about Occupational Therapy beyond the textbook.
OT is about participation, not perfection.
It is about removing barriers, adapting environments, pacing, problem solving and helping people engage in the moments that matter.
It is about seeing the whole person – body, mind, emotions and identity.

Bec shared the depth and heart of Social Work.
Holding space for families during the hard moments.
Advocating, navigating systems, building emotional resilience and strengthening support networks.
Often the quiet role that changes everything.

Being surrounded by professionals who understand the invisible layers of hypermobility and chronic illness was incredibly meaningful. There is something special about working with people who truly get it.

Thank you to the Not Just Bendy team for the warmth, the thoughtful conversation and your commitment to providing exceptional care. We are grateful for the collaboration and look forward to continuing to support shared clients together.

People thrive when teams connect.

Do. Be. Become. Belong.
