Share these tips with a loved one or someone you know who uses a 4-wheeled walker ๐๐ปโโ๏ธ
1๏ธโฃ ADJUSTABLE HANDLE HEIGHT ๐ซณ๐ผ
The handles should be around hip height so you can stand upright when walking. Inappropriate height may look like: bending over to reach the handles (too low) or your shoulders bunching up and tightening (too high). Both cause poor energy use and postural stability which is so important for your balance, endurance, and overall mobility.
2๏ธโฃ APPROPRIATE SEAT HEIGHT ๐ช
Both feet should be flat on the floor when seated to create stable surface to help you stand up. The lower the seat, the more strength you need to stand. Note - the walkerโs seat should only be used for a short rest when necessary, it is not a chair or replacement of a wheelchair.
3๏ธโฃ SIZE OF WHEELS ๐
Smaller wheels allow for more manoeuvrability around tight corners but may feel too โzippyโ for some people. Larger wheels often feel more stable and are preferable for outdoors. Consider when and where your walker would be used when choosing which size wheels.
4๏ธโฃ WEIGHT AND WIDTH OF THE FRAME ๐๐ท
Choose a walker that fits through your doorways and is also comfortable when you are seated. If you need to use it in the community, ensure the walker is light enough to lift, folds easily and can be stored in the boot of the car to be transported.
