☀️ Eye Tip of the Month:

Always wear your sunnies — especially with Australia’s high UV levels!

UV radiation can cause serious eye damage over time, including:

👁️ Photokeratitis (sunburn of the eye)
🌤️ Pterygium and pinguecula (growths on the eye surface)
🌞 Cataracts
🧴 Eyelid and skin cancers around the eyes

Even on cloudy days, UV rays can still reach your eyes — so keep those sunnies handy year-round. 🕶️

👁️ World Diabetes Day reminds us that diabetes doesn’t just affect your blood sugar, it can affect your vision too.

Diabetic Retinopathy is one of the leading causes of preventable blindness, caused by damage to the tiny blood vessels at the back of the eye.

Often, there are no early warning signs — but regular eye checks can make all the difference.

🔹 If you have diabetes, make sure to have a comprehensive eye exam every 12 months.

Early detection = protected vision. 👁️💙

🌏 Making a global impact, one eye at a time!

Two of our clinical optometrists, P**c Ngo and Clodagh Sinnott, have just returned from Cambodia, where they volunteered their time and skills at outreach eye clinics.

Alongside local teams and international organisations, they helped deliver eye assessments, screenings, and supported surgical triage for communities with limited access to specialist care.

We’re proud to support healthcare professionals who share their expertise beyond the clinic — making eye care more accessible worldwide. 🌏👁️

✨ Taking Eye Care North! ✨

The Eye Health Centre hit the road to support regional optometrists. They’re the first line of care for so many patients in rural Queensland. 💙

✅ Mackay: Dr Andrew Apel & Dr Aaron Chidgey led a CPD evening on corneal graft surgery and retinitis, sharing surgical insights and collaborative care strategies.

✅ Cairns: Joined by Clinical Optometrist Jason Holland for an interactive Optometry Australia session—a hands-on look at managing anterior eye conditions.

Why do we do this? Because every patient deserves world-class eye care, no matter where they live. These events strengthen knowledge, communication, and care pathways between optometry and ophthalmology.

👏 Huge thanks to our regional optometrists for your dedication—you make a difference every day!

Not sure how to put in eye drops properly? You’re not alone.

Here are simple steps to help you get the most out of your eye treatment:

✅ Steps to apply eye drops:

Wash your hands
Tilt your head back and look up
Gently pull down your lower eyelid
Hold the bottle above your eye — don’t touch your eye
Squeeze one drop into the pocket
Close your eyes gently (don’t blink)
Press your finger gently on the inner corner of your eye for 1 minute

💡 Using more than one type of drop? Wait 5 minutes between each.

Always follow your eye specialist’s instructions, and check with us if you’re unsure.

While lifestyle factors such as diet, exercise, and overall health cannot prevent all eye problems, they also play an important role in maintaining healthy eyes. At The Eye Health Centre, our optometrists can assess your risk, monitor changes over time, and provide personalised care to help safeguard your vision.
