Your patients' microbiome is a whole ecosystem 🌍

They deserve to have it measured that way.

The gut microbiome influences health through microbial metabolism, immune regulation, gut barrier function, and signalling pathways. It's a two-way relationship – the microbiome shapes the body, and the body shapes the microbiome.

Partial testing captures fragments of this system. Whole-ecosystem metagenomics measures it as the whole picture – species-level, function-aware, ecologically complete.

Because when it comes to complex, chronic presentations, the whole picture changes the conversation. πŸ’¬

This is what whole-ecosystem microbiome testing actually looks like 🌍

Traditional testing looks for specific organisms. One target. One answer.

But the gut contains trillions of microorganisms – bacteria, fungi, Archaea, protists – and they don’t just exist. They function.

Metabolic pathways. Functional genes. Ecological interactions.

Whole-ecosystem metagenomics captures all of it πŸ‘‡

βœ… Species-level identification
βœ… Functional capacity
βœ… Ecological balance

Not a checklist. An ecosystem.

The whole picture. Finally. πŸ”¬

The clinical standard for microbiome assessment is evolving πŸ”¬

Whole-ecosystem. Species-level. Function-aware.

The microbiome is not best understood through a "good bugs vs bad bugs" lens. Clinical relevance is determined by ecological balance, functional pathways, metabolic output, and patient context.

When we measure the whole ecosystem, we move from asking "is this pathogen present?" to asking "what is this ecosystem functionally capable of – and how might that be influencing this patient's presentation?"

That shift doesn't replace clinical judgement. It expands it. πŸ’‘β

4 methods. 4 questions. One clear answer. 🎯

Not all microbiome tests are built for the same purpose. Some detect specific pathogens. Some survey broad bacterial groups. Only one measures the whole ecosystem – species-level, function-aware, across bacteria, fungi, Archaea, and protists.

Swipe through to see how culture, qPCR, 16S rRNA sequencing, and shotgun metagenomics compare against the clinical questions that matter most πŸ‘‰

The science speaks for itself. 🧬

A question worth sitting with πŸ’

A patient presents with chronic bloating, fatigue, and brain fog. Conventional workup is unremarkable. You order a targeted gut microbiome test – results come back within normal limits.

But the symptoms persist.

A whole-ecosystem test reveals reduced butyrate-producing capacity, elevated inflammatory signalling potential, and diminished microbial diversity – a pattern that the targeted test was never designed to detect.

How often do targeted tests answer the question we actually need answered?

We'd love to hear your experience. Have you ever had a case where the test result didn't match the clinical picture? πŸ‘‡

Detecting an organism and understanding its role are two very different things. 🧬

Take butyrate production. Multiple species contribute to butyrate synthesis in the gut. A targeted test might detect a few of them, but it can't tell you whether total butyrate-producing capacity is sufficient or depleted.

That distinction changes the clinical recommendation.

The same applies to pro-inflammatory-LPS signalling. Pro-inflammatory forms of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) are produced by many gram-negative bacteria. A single-organism test won't quantify total LPS burden. Ecosystem-level analysis assesses the cumulative inflammatory signalling potential.

The clinical picture depends on the whole community – not one member of it. 🌿

Four questions. One honest check. βœ‹

If your current microbiome test can't answer these, it may be worth asking why:

+ Is this organism ecologically dominant, or controlled by the ecosystem?
+ Is the ecosystem resilient, or vulnerable to instability?
+ Is beneficial functional capacity reduced?
+ Is inflammatory signalling potential elevated?

Microbiome balance is an ecosystem property. It emerges from the whole system, not from a pre-defined checklist of organisms.

If the clinical question is ecosystem-level understanding, the measurement needs to match. 🎯

Test came back negative. Patient still in discomfort. Why? πŸ€”

Targeted tests detect specific organisms. If it's on the list, it's found. If it's not, it's invisible.

But most health conditions are linked with ecosystem-level imbalances in the gut microbiome – not a single organism.

πŸ”Ή Reduced butyrate production
πŸ”Ή Elevated inflammatory signalling
πŸ”Ή Loss of ecological resilience

These are functional insights. They come from whole-ecosystem analysis. And they can change what you recommend to your patient.

The answer might be in what the test didn't measure.

A checklist won't capture the full picture πŸ”¬

The gut microbiome contains hundreds of different bacterial species, along with fungi, archaea, and protists. It's a dynamic ecosystem shaped by diversity, ecological balance, and functional capacity.

But not every test sees it that way:

πŸ”Ή Culture – a glance. Limited to organisms that grow in the lab. No ecosystem context.
πŸ”Ή PCR – a narrow focus. Highly sensitive, but only for the targets you've already decided to look for.
πŸ”Ή Microbiome Explorer – the whole picture. Species-level, function-aware, across the entire ecosystem.

Same patient. Same sample. Very different levels of insight.
