On my way to advocate for communication access… because every child deserves to be heard 💬✨

At Playful Paediatrics, we believe that all communication is valid - whether it’s words, gestures, AAC, sounds, or behaviour. Communication isn’t one-size-fits-all, and it’s not something children need to “earn” - it’s a human right.

When we honour how a child communicates, we open the door to connection, regulation, and meaningful relationships 🤍

There’s something powerful about slowing down together 🌿

Yesterday the PP team stepped out into our community… collecting little pieces of nature as we reflected on the start of the year - the wins, the challenges, the growth, and everything in between.

Each stem, each flower, a reminder that progress doesn’t have to be perfect to be meaningful 💛
Just like the children and families we support, growth happens in real environments, in small moments, and through connection.

Abi has been soaking up all the learning this week at a CPD with the Hanen Centre 📚✨

We’re so excited to officially welcome Abi to the Playful Paediatrics team this April - with immediate availability for families ready to get started 💛

Abi is passionate about supporting children’s communication through connection, play and everyday moments, and has been diving into the Hanen approach to bring practical, evidence-based strategies into her sessions 💬

Holly from Playful Paediatrics was joined by Kellie from Little Swan Psych and Jill from Kids Matters OT to share practical, everyday strategies to support children’s communication, regulation and development.

🌙 Ramadan Kareem 💚

At Playful Paediatrics, we recognise that Ramadan is a deeply meaningful month for many of the families we support.

Ramadan is a time of reflection, faith, generosity and connection. Many Muslim adults fast from dawn to sunset, evenings are often filled with prayer and family gatherings, and there’s a beautiful sense of community and giving.

For children, this can mean:
✨ Changes in routine
✨ Later bedtimes
✨ Different energy levels
✨ Big feelings
✨ Pride in family traditions
✨ Excitement about Eid

Why this matters…

During Ramadan, you might notice your child is a little more tired, less regulated, or needing a gentler pace. That’s okay. We meet children where they are always. Connection comes first.

For our Director and Principal Speechie, Holly, personally, this season holds deep respect and understanding. Before founding Playful Paediatrics, Holly worked in supported children and families in Saudi Arabia and Egypt years.

Working alongside families in these communities gave her firsthand insight into:
• The importance of faith and family rhythm
• Cultural humility in practice
• Adjusting expectations around energy and routine
• The richness of multilingual, multicultural homes
• The beauty of traditions that shape identity

That experience profoundly shaped the leadership of Playful Paediatrics today. It strengthened commitment to culturally responsive care and not just awareness, but genuine understanding and respect.

Rainy day? Play dough fun 🙌💚

There’s something magic about squishy hands and big imaginations. Play dough isn’t just sensory fun — it’s a communication playground.

Here’s our go-to no-cook play dough recipe (soft, stretchy, and perfect for little hands):

✨ 2 cups plain flour
✨ 2 tbsp vegetable oil (baby oil or coconut oil work too)
✨ 1/2 cup salt
✨ 2 tbsp cream of tartar
✨ 1–1.5 cups boiling water (add slowly)
✨ Gel food colouring (optional)
✨ A few drops of glycerine (for extra stretch & shine)
✨Add some essential oils for extra sensory element

Mix dry ingredients → add oil → slowly stir in boiling water → knead when cool enough.

Now the fun part… 💬

Try these communication strategies while you play:

🗣 Model, don’t quiz.
Instead of “What colour is that?” try
“I’m rolling the *blue* dough. It’s soooo long!”

⏸ Pause with purpose.
Hold the cutter and wait… give them space to request:
“Cut?” “Star?” “More?”

🔁 Expand their words.
Child: “Snake!”
You: “A long, wiggly green snake!”

🎭 Add pretend play.
Make birthday cakes, pizza shops, animal worlds. Pretend play = rich language opportunities.

🤲 Follow their lead.
Connection first. Words grow best when children feel seen, not tested.

Play is powerful.
Communication grows in moments like these. 💙

When we invite toys and create little “scenes”, we’re building:

✨ Imagination
✨ Perspective-taking
✨ Storytelling skills
✨ Emotional language (“They’re waiting… They’re cold… They love the rain!”)

You don’t need fancy toys or structured activities. Just pause, notice what your child is doing, and join their idea. Add a thought. Add a feeling. Add a small problem to solve.
Connection first. Language follows. 💛
