When children’s emotions are ignored or shut down, they have no understanding of how to express their feelings in a safe and appropriate way.
There is another kind of trauma. I'm talking about the internal experience, not the external event, which is called developmental trauma. And developmental trauma is where the child's emotions don't have a safe relational container.
Infants, young children, they need the attuned reflection of the adult, of the parent, to validate their emotions, to validate their experience. When the parents can't do that, without in any way being abusive, that child has to limit themselves, and their expression of themselves. So they will also be defended against their vulnerability.
