Via James Clear, atomic habits:

Building better habits isn’t about littering your day with life hacks. It’s not about flossing one tooth each night or taking a cold shower each morning or wearing the same outfit each day. It’s not about achieving external measures of success like earning more money, losing weight, or reducing stress. Habits can help you achieve all of these things, but fundamentally they are not about having something. They are about becoming someone.

This adorable photo is of my aunt (who insists she is 49) talking to my dad (91) on my iPad. They haven’t seen each other in a long time although they talk on the phone daily. Living far away is one reason, but health issues, knee replacements, weak bladders means long car trips are out of the question, and travel any other way is too inconvenient. I loved being able to connect them this way - my aunt has never had a computer or even a cell phone, although my dad has kept up with technology, much to his credit.

Loss of mobility can affect us in ways we can’t even imagine until it happens to us. If you’ve ever lost the use of a limb or joint temporarily (from a broken bone or injury) you have experienced how difficult the things we take for granted become! Getting dressed, eating, going to the bathroom, carrying a cup or bowl of food to the table…the list goes on.
A loss of whole body mobility often results in isolation. Technology in the form of communication, but also technology in the form of assistive devices can help us do the things we love to do longer. It’s never too late to start working on restoring balance and mobility! next course runs in June.

Breathing! At the border of conscious and unconscious, autonomic and controlled, life and death, is the humble yet endlessly important activity of breathing. Breathing can calm you down or energise you, it can clear the fog and create it, it can create out of body experiences and hallucinations and it can anchor you in your body like nothing else.
Whereas there different ways to breathe, breathing exercises and breathing techniques, breathing is a MOVEMENT. It happens in your body and it relies on your body parts to move in synchrony in order to allow for the best outcome. Breathing, even forced and structured one should be effortless and that depends on whether the muscles of your trunk - core, pelvic floor, ribcage, back, neck and shoulders have the ability to allow the respiratory diaphragm to descend and ascend unobstructed. Sedentary lifestyle leads to adaptations that cause several of the structures involved in breathing to become stiff, this inhibiting the full use of the lungs. Exactly one year ago I held the "Move to improve breathing" workshop - very needed piece in the art of better living. I'm considering organising another one this year.

What a week it has been here in West End! This a Video before the street actually got flooded. For those of you not local, it rained non stop for 3 days (4?), West End got flooded from the river and from water accumulating in the streets, people moved around in kayaks! We lost electricity for 5 days, not sure power is on everywhere now. It was mentally and physically exhausting. Sunshine today however, although the forecast if for rain and thunderstorms in the next few days...

Bodies are made to move. Actually, minds are made to move too. Did you know that primitive nervous systems started to become more complex and grow additional neurons in order to move - to chase a prey or to escape. Our entire experience depends on movement. That's why some people take their exercise routines seriously. However, here is something so simple you can do to get more movement into your day with all the benefits, while doing literally nothing - except for giving the opportunity to your joints to move in their full range of motion, by not using sitting furniture. Read more in the blog about my sitting furniture free home.

My Furniture-free Home People have asked what does it look like to be furniture-free? So I snapped today this photo of my 11 year old doing his homework. This is our living room. He is squatting by a low table and writing. As you can see, there is nothing to see here. But let's explore a bit further...

"I don't know if you do that much in Brisbane, but if you are not sending trauma patients for Craniosacral therapy or Feldenkrais, you should." Dr. Bessel van der Kolk at his Brisbane training "The body keeps the score: Trauma, Attachment and Neuroscience, 2020. Embodied self-awareness and self-regulation". Two years ago today, IN PERSON 😀
He completed the first teaching period saying that to the audience of different trauma professionals.
