Breathing! At the border of conscious and unconscious, autonomic and controlled, life and death, is the humble yet endlessly important activity of breathing. Breathing can calm you down or energise you, it can clear the fog and create it, it can create out of body experiences and hallucinations and it can anchor you in your body like nothing else.
Whereas there different ways to breathe, breathing exercises and breathing techniques, breathing is a MOVEMENT. It happens in your body and it relies on your body parts to move in synchrony in order to allow for the best outcome. Breathing, even forced and structured one should be effortless and that depends on whether the muscles of your trunk - core, pelvic floor, ribcage, back, neck and shoulders have the ability to allow the respiratory diaphragm to descend and ascend unobstructed. Sedentary lifestyle leads to adaptations that cause several of the structures involved in breathing to become stiff, this inhibiting the full use of the lungs. Exactly one year ago I held the "Move to improve breathing" workshop - very needed piece in the art of better living. I'm considering organising another one this year.
