The Common Good Au Proudly supporting The Prince Charles Hospital and Caboolture Hospital. Our research areas are health issues that touch nearly everyone in some way.

The Common Good, an initiative of The Prince Charles Hospital Foundation, exists to help people live healthier, for longer. Through the power of the collective, we support and facilitate the work of incredible researchers who are dedicated to making breakthroughs in the areas of heart disease, lung disease, mental health and dementia. Whether it be a friend, a family member, or a colleague, we all know someone who is impacted by at least one of these conditions. In turn, that means we all know someone who can benefit from funding research in these areas. By funding research, we can provide hope to those suffering today, and for future generations to come. The impacts of our research ripple right across the nation and the world. We're on a mission to sustain the work of our brilliant researchers so that they can continue to make life-saving and life-changing medical breakthroughs. And we want you to join us. Research is a long game, so we need to support and fund as many hours as possible to ensure no stone is left unturned in any of our research areas. Every hour of research gets us one step closer to a medical breakthrough. We are also incredibly proud to support hospital innovation and patient care initiatives at both The Prince Charles Hospital and Caboolture Hospital.

Introducing Story No. 4 in our 40 Stories for 40 Years series

New Investigator Grants:
The first step in the Foundation’s researcher pathway

Every breakthrough starts somewhere.

For a researcher, it begins with a strong idea and a desire to improve patient outcomes. But turning that idea into meaningful impact requires funding and support.

That’s why The Prince Charles Hospital Foundation established the New Investigator Grants in 2010 — to support researchers at the very beginning of their careers and help bring promising projects to life.

“Typically, new investigators haven't done any research before, so this program is designed to support them and guide them through those initial steps of getting into research,” says the Foundation’s Research Manager, Dr Rebekah Engel.

Since 2010, more than 280 New Investigator grants have been awarded, totalling over $2.66 million — building research capability and improving patient outcomes now and into the future.

We’re proud to welcome Yaralla Cricket Club as the very first club to join our 40 Schools & 40 Clubs for 40 Years initiative, celebrating The Prince Charles Hospital Foundation’s 40-year milestone.

This partnership is especially meaningful, created in honour of Tracey Slatter — a lung transplant recipient at The Prince Charles Hospital, who survived an additional 10 years after her transplant and sadly passed away in 2024.

Tracey's legacy lives on, continuing to inspire generosity and community action within Yaralla Cricket Club.

Their final shield match of the season is today, 14 February, and will see the club selling their iconic pink baggy caps to players and supporters, with proceeds supporting The Common Good.

We wish them every success and thank them for their ongoing support.

As we mark 40 years of impact, we invite other local clubs, schools and community groups to join us. Get in touch to find out how your group can make a difference.

This week, The Prince Charles Hospital Foundation hosted its third annual Women in Science high tea at the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre, to coincide with the International Day of Women and Girls in Science (11 February).

The event brings together outstanding female researchers supported by the Foundation to share their work, their career journeys and their commitment to improving patient outcomes — both now and into the future.

It is an important opportunity to celebrate leadership in research and highlight the impact of the Foundation's sustained investment in women in STEM.

We extend our sincere thanks to Dr Faye Jordan, Helen Edwards and Dr Lisa Franks for generously sharing their expertise and experiences, and for continuing to advocate for greater representation and opportunity in research.

Guests also heard from Sharon Hoole, mother of Rhys Hoole, the 500th heart transplant recipient at The Prince Charles Hospital. Sharon reflected on how decades of research shaped the care her son received, and the vital importance of continuing to pursue new and better treatment options.

Thank you also to Shannon Willoughby for expertly guiding the morning, and to our partners and guests for their ongoing support of research excellence.

The research highlighted at this event is only possible because of the sustained support of our incredible community.

Introducing Story No. 3 in our 40 Stories for 40 Years series
Thuy Frakking: Listening for the smallest signs

At The Prince Charles Hospital Foundation, we are proud to support dozens of incredible female researchers and, on this International Day of Women and Girls in Science, we’re excited to spotlight the work of one of them.

Adjunct Associate Professor Thuy Frakking has dedicated years of her career to supporting families whose children struggle silently with swallowing impairment. In premature babies and infants, even a slight disruption of the swallowing process can lead to aspiration, which can have serious consequences.

Supported in part through a Caboolture, Kilcoy, Woodford research grant from The Prince Charles Hospital Foundation in 2022, Thuy led the Swallowing Sounds in Premature Babies (SUPERB) Study.

The project set out to answer a deceptively simple question: could we detect swallowing impairment in a non-invasive, repeatable and more accessible way — simply by analysing sound?

Her research has the potential to transform how swallowing difficulties are identified and monitored in some of the most vulnerable patients.

On this International Day of Women and Girls in Science, we celebrate Thuy and the many women in research whose work is changing lives every day.💜

At 23, Rhys Hoole collapsed on the footy field. A cardiac arrest nearly cut his life short on that day in March 2022.

Over the next couple of years, he was gradually becoming more tired and feeling more unwell because his heart failure was worsening.

In 2024, Rhys received the precious gift of a second chance at life in the form of a donor’s heart and became the 500th heart transplant recipient at The Prince Charles Hospital.

He was just 25 at the time.

Rhys and his family are incredibly grateful for the research of the past that has given him more days with the people he loves.

“You know, the research, it’s behind every piece of machinery and every new surgical technique …There were so many times when research saved my life and as it gets better over time, it’ll go on to save even more. It’s not just saving lives, it’s helping people create memories and get back to living a full life. The impact research will have in the future is enormous,” Rhys said.

Now a Community Ambassador for The Prince Charles Hospital Foundation, Rhys is sharing his inspiring story as part of our 40 Stories for 40 Years series.💜

Local business-led event delivers $1,000+ for life-changing hospital initiatives and medical research

As The Prince Charles Hospital Foundation marks 40 years of impact, we’re proud to collaborate with new local business partners like MTG MATE, specialists in trading card games and community-led events.🎴

MTG MATE recently hosted a sold-out “Magic: The Gathering” charity tournament, bringing together players, collectors, and fans to compete, connect, and give back - all in support of The Common Good.

The event featured hourly giveaways, including custom MTG MATE x The Common Good playmats, generously sponsored by Takomats.

Thanks to the collective generosity of participants and partners, the tournament raised over $1,000, supporting life-changing research and patient care initiatives at The Prince Charles and Caboolture Hospitals.

In addition to the funds raised, MTG MATE also generously donated several boxes of booster packs to children in the hospital’s Children’s Ward, bringing joy to young patients during their hospital stay.

We’re grateful for MTG MATE’s commitment to building a lasting partnership and demonstrating how purpose-driven collaborations can deliver meaningful community impact.

The success of this event has already sparked plans more tournaments later this year and inspired other local businesses to explore community-led fundraising initiatives of their own.

🤝If your business is interested in hosting an event to support The Common Good, please contact our Community Fundraising Team at events@tpchfoundation.org.au or learn more via our website.

Our Story

The Common Good is people powering medical discoveries.

The Common Good is an initiative of The Prince Charles Hospital Foundation established in 1986 under the patronage of His Royal Highness, Prince Charles, The Prince of Wales, to inspire a generous community to fund life-saving and life-changing health research that tackles Australia’s most significant chronic diseases.

Last year we provided over $5 million in grants for innovative and sustainable medical research, helping devoted researchers to pursue smart research without having to spend the majority of their time writing annual research grants or worry that their work won't be followed through. Our aim is to continue to provide more than $5 million every year to stoke innovation, with the help of people like you.

When you join The Common Good, you’re joining a movement; and when you support a particular area of research, you’re joining a team of researchers, donors, volunteers, partners and everyday people who all care about finding a breakthrough just as much as you do.
