The Common Good Au Proudly supporting The Prince Charles Hospital and Caboolture Hospital. Our research areas are health issues that touch nearly everyone in some way.

The Common Good, an initiative of The Prince Charles Hospital Foundation, exists to help people live healthier, for longer. Through the power of the collective, we support and facilitate the work of incredible researchers who are dedicated to making breakthroughs in the areas of heart disease, lung disease, mental health and dementia. Whether it be a friend, a family member, or a colleague, we all

know someone who is impacted by at least one of these conditions. In turn, that means we all know someone who can benefit from funding research in these areas. By funding research, we can provide hope to those suffering today, and for future generations to come. The impacts of our research ripple right across the nation and the world. We're on a mission to sustain the work of our brilliant researchers so that they can continue to make life-saving and life-changing medical breakthroughs. And we want you to join us. Research is a long game, so we need to support and fund as many hours as possible to ensure no stone is left unturned in any of our research areas. Every hour of research gets us one step closer to a medical breakthrough. We are also incredibly proud to support hospital innovation and patient care initiatives at both The Prince Charles Hospital and Caboolture Hospital.

Sarah Mackay: Exploring perspectives on malnutrition terminology

New Investigator Grant and PhD Scholarship Recipient, Sarah Mackay, is a Senior Dietitian at The Prince Charles Hospital, who wants to see a reduction in the number of older hospital patients with malnutrition.🩺

“We know that roughly about 30% of adult inpatients have malnutrition, and about a quarter of long-stay patients in hospital develop malnutrition, or their malnutrition status gets worse during their hospital stay,” says Sarah.

“The implications of that are huge. They end up staying in hospital longer. They’re more likely to get readmitted. Their mortality rate is higher…pressure injuries, falls, and all those other things are much more likely to occur if a person has malnutrition.”

A statewide nutrition audit, in which patients are asked whether they remember being informed about their nutrition diagnosis or nutrition care plan in hospital, showed that a significant proportion of patients don’t really understand their nutritional status.

Sarah hopes her research will lead to a better understanding of health workers, patients, and caregivers' perspectives on malnutrition terminology and communication, to improve outcomes in Queensland and beyond.

“My goal is to help health workers explain malnutrition in a way that is easy to understand and meaningful to patients and caregivers, so they can make informed choices about their malnutrition care.”🫶

Recently, we were honoured to be welcomed behind “The Green Door”, the private entrance to Margot McKinney boutique, for a special gathering marking the beginning of a new partnership with McKinney's Jewellers .🤍✨

Bringing together a small group of guests, the morning offered a rare insight into the craftsmanship and legacy that has defined the McKinney’s name for more than 140 years. From an intimate viewing of exceptional pieces to a private screening of their pearl documentary, it reflected a brand shaped by heritage, precision and long-standing relationships.

Importantly, the conversation extended beyond the treasures in the room.

Guests also heard from Dr Eamonn Eeles, who shared insights into his decade-long work focused on earlier diagnosis of dementia, helping to give individuals and families answers sooner, and more time to understand what lies ahead.

Dementia is not just a clinical issue, but a deeply personal one for many families. It is also an area where early-stage research, supported here in Brisbane, continues to shape what is possible for the future.

Thank you to the McKinney’s family for their generosity in hosting, and for the opportunity to experience a brand where legacy and relationships are clearly at the centre of everything they do.

Have you ever wondered what lies behind the Green Door? Here is a glimpse into a very special morning.🟢

💜 40 Schools. 40 Clubs. Doing Good initiative welcomes Glenmore Bulls AFC on board🐂 💪

We’re proud to welcome Glenmore Bulls AFC as part of our 40 Clubs. 40 Schools. Doing Good initiative, helping continue 40 years of impact at The Prince Charles Hospital Foundation.

Based in Rockhampton, the Glenmore Bulls are a proud, family-oriented community club that goes far beyond the footy field.

They’ve come together to support The Common Good by getting behind fundraising efforts that advance life-changing medical research, specialised equipment and patient care programs at The Prince Charles Hospital.

When one of their own, Jack, faced a sudden and serious heart condition requiring urgent surgery, what followed was an incredibly challenging time—but Jack didn’t face it alone. In true Glenmore Bulls spirit, teammates, friends and the wider community rallied around him and his family with unwavering support, both on and off the field.

At just 25, Jack underwent life-saving open-heart surgery at The Prince Charles Hospital. Today, we’re so pleased to share that Jack has made a remarkable recovery. Jack and his family have shared deep gratitude for the care he received—care they credit with saving his life.

Now, they are turning that gratitude into action.

A huge thank you to the players, volunteers, supporters and wider Glenmore Bulls community for getting behind this initiative and best of luck for the season ahead.

Are you part of a great local community group? Whether a sporting club, community group, school or childcare centre, we’d love to hear from you 🤝

Every day, Australia’s tradies build the world around us — but for many, that work comes at a cost.

Introducing Story No. 9 in our 40 Stories for 40 Years series
Tradie Health Institute: Protecting the lungs of Australia’s tradies

As cases of silicosis and other dust lung diseases began to rise across Australia, it became clear that more needed to be done – not just to treat the disease, but to understand it, detect it earlier, and ultimately prevent it.

In 2018, The Prince Charles Hospital Foundation established the Tradie Health Institute initiative – a focused research area dedicated to improving health outcomes for Australia’s trade, mining, and agricultural workforce.

Working in collaboration with the Queensland Lung Transplant Service (QLTS), clinicians, scientists, and industry, the initiative has become a driving force in world-first research.

“We are committed to supporting research that drives real, tangible impacts for the health of our nation’s tradies and their families,” said Steve Francia, CEO of The Prince Charles Hospital Foundation.

Professor Dan Chambers, senior thoracic physician and head of research at the QLTS and his team are focused on four critical areas: prevention, earlier detection, better treatments, and understanding the disease itself.

“All of this research is focused on protecting tradies and their families, but research like this only happens because people and industries get behind it,” said Prof Dan Chambers.

Discover how this work is helping protect the lungs of Australia’s workforce — and how you can help make an impact.

Our Story

The Common Good is people powering medical discoveries.

The Common Good is an initiative of The Prince Charles Hospital Foundation established in 1986 under the patronage of His Royal Highness, Prince Charles, The Prince of Wales, to inspire a generous community to fund life-saving and life-changing health research that tackles Australia’s most significant chronic diseases.

Last year we provided over $5 million in grants for innovative and sustainable medical research, helping devoted researchers to pursue smart research without having to spend the majority of their time writing annual research grants or worry that their work won't be followed through. Our aim is to continue to provide more than $5 million every year to stoke innovation, with the help of people like you.

When you join The Common Good, you’re joining a movement; and when you support a particular area of research, you’re joining a team of researchers, donors, volunteers, partners and everyday people who all care about finding a breakthrough just as much as you do.
