The challenges facing Queensland's health workforce have been front and centre this week.

Health Minister Tim Nicholls addressed the Queensland Media Club about the government's priorities for the public health system, pledging to "build and fill" our hospitals.

AMA Queensland President Dr Nick Yim says we're still waiting for details on how the government will recruit the 6000 doctors needed by 2032.

Dr Yim also spoke with ABC Radio Brisbane about doctor burnout and rising private health insurance premiums and the added pressure on our public hospitals.

Queensland doctors and patients deserve a plan.

Meet Noah Steel, a 2025 Medical Student Scholarship recipient who is now in his final year at University of Queensland in Bundaberg.

When Noah applied for the scholarship, he was facing a considerable shortfall in basic living support after a program for regional students was discontinued. Noah was unsure how he was going to be able to maintain stable housing while meeting the rigorous requirements of his medical degree.

The scholarship has helped him bridge that gap and help him get closer to becoming a doctor in Queensland.

If you are in a similar situation, the scholarship might help you.

The scholarship helped her cover essential living costs and medications and allowed her to focus on her studies during the crucial final year.

Dr Vincent was the Indian Medical Association Queensland (IMAQ)-AMA Queensland Foundation scholarship recipient for 2025, under the Sponsor one Student (SOS) program.

How might a $10,000 scholarship help you continue your studies and reach your dreams of becoming a doctor? Find out more about our scholarship and make your application:

As Queenslanders – we know hot weather. ☀️🥵

But did you know extreme heat is our deadliest natural hazard, responsible for more deaths than bushfire, cyclones and floods combined?

Today marks Extreme Heat Awareness Day, raising awareness of the dangers posed by rising temperatures and prolonged heatwaves.

Recognising the signs of heat stress and heat stroke is critical, particularly in children and seniors.

But we also need to plan better for our future.

We know we need more emphasis on active travel – such as walking and cycling - for health and reducing carbon emissions.

We need to make sure adequate development of active travel networks – with appropriate shade – is front and centre in city planning. 🌳

That’s why AMA Queensland is working with like-minded organisations to advocate for better active travel access, especially around our schools and health facilities.

Queenslanders deserve to stay cool and healthy, no matter the weather.
