This Trans Awareness Week, we stand with the trans community in advocating for better access to health care for all trans patients, especially children and young people. Trans and gender diverse patients deserve timely, affordable, high-quality care to live full, vibrant and healthy lives.

AMA Queensland partnered with other medical colleges to advocate for reinstatement of paediatric gender hormone treatment services following the Queensland Government’s sudden ban in January 2025. We have had multiple members, doctors, patients and their families reach out to advise us of the devastating impact the ban has had on the community.

This week—and every week—we affirm:
🏳️‍⚧️ Trans lives matter.
🏳️‍⚧️ Trans children and young people deserve care.
🏳️‍⚧️ Trans people deserve dignity, respect and access to the services they need.

More than 1100 Queenslanders are taking up acute hospital beds when they be in aged care or have NDIS support. It creates “bed block” which puts strain on the system. AMA Queensland President joined and .mp at Redlands Hospital to call on the federal government to increase its funding to this critical area. We need governments to work together to get better outcomes for patients and clinicians.

Some signs of progress are starting to show, but junior doctors are telling us loud and clear that the culture in many hospitals still needs real work. 🏥

Too many are worried about speaking up, raising concerns, or calling out unsafe behaviour.

“What we need to see urgently is real investment into our medical workforce to staff our hospitals properly, as called for in AMA Queensland’s Workforce Action Plan.” - AMA Queensland President Dr Nick Yim

We've released our 2025 Resident Hospital Health Check - an annual survey of Queensland doctors in training.

Nearly 800 doctors have given Queensland Health a cautionary B minus grade overall - but issues around safety, fatigue and training show there's still much more work to be done.
