The AMA Queensland Foundation Chair Dr Dilip Dhupelia extends a warm message of thanks to all supporters this festive season.

In our 25th year, the Foundation has had a huge year and is proud to have been a part of some amazing projects supporting better health in Queensland.

Continuing the legacy of our Medical Student Scholarship program, we awarded scholarships to four medical students who were experiencing financial hardship to help them continue their studies. Two have just graduated as doctors in Queensland. We provided research and training bursaries to three GPs and GP Registrars in 2025. We also supported the training of five new Bereaved Parent Mentors with the Ladybird Care Foundation and provided grants to nine organisations helping Queenslanders experiencing domestic and family violence.

This Christmas, we are proud to be raising funds for the important social cause of mental health and su***de prevention. Through the incredible generosity of our supporters, we are currently at $29,950 of our $50,000 target. With just days to go until Christmas, we are asking for your help to make our target.

Your donation this Christmas can make a tangible difference to help raise much-needed funds for improved services and support across Queensland.

🩺 Every day, Queensland doctors care for patients facing mental ill‑health and su***de risk but they themselves are at increased risk too, especially in their training years.

As part of raising awareness and support during the AMA Queensland Foundation Christmas appeal, the team spoke with Dr Emma Hodge, Chair of AMA Queensland Doctors in Training Committee, and Medical Education and Wellbeing Registrar at Bundaberg Hospital.

Dr Hodge shed light on the systemic, cultural and personal pressures that can intensify stress and increase the risk of developing poor mental health for junior doctors.

Three events. One goal: supporting the medical profession at every stage.

AMA Queensland recently hosted our Private Practice Refreshed, Member Networking, and Intern Workshop events on the Gold Coast. Private Practice Refreshed and Member Networking brought together members from across all career stages, while the Intern Workshop supported final-year medical students as they prepare to enter the medical workforce. It was great to see strong engagement, valuable discussions, and meaningful connections across all three events.

AMA Queensland is shocked and saddened by the horrific events at Bondi Beach on Sunday.

Our thoughts are with the victims and their families, those present who helped others in such a terrifying moment, the first responders who ran towards danger, and the Jewish community.

We also know doctors will be working incredibly hard to help those affected, many of whom may have traumatic and life-altering injuries.

To that end, we urge Queenslanders to donate blood in the coming days and weeks. Blood – particularly Type O varieties – is critical in emergency medicine.

Australian Red Cross Lifeblood has sent Queensland supplies to Sydney to assist, but the demand will likely remain for some time.

You can call 13 14 95 to make a booking or do so online. ❤

The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency - Ahpra and the Medical Board of Australia have decided NOT to impose mandatory health checks on older doctors due to little evidence they were required.

This sensible change in Ahpra’s treatment of senior doctors is due to the tireless advocacy of AMA Queensland Council member and ASADA Vice President Associate Professor Geoff Hawson and AMA Queensland member and ASADA President Dr Barbara Woodhouse.

Advocacy on these issues form a key part of AMA Queensland’s Senior Doctor Conference, the next of which will be held in 2027.
