🚨 AHPRA English Requirement Update (From 23 April 2026)

Planning to register as a nurse or midwife in Australia?
This update could directly impact your application.

The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia has revised the English test score requirements — but it’s not as simple as “scores increased.”

✔️ Some scores have gone down
✔️ Some components have actually increased
✔️ Requirements now depend on when you took your test

For example:
PTE overall score has dropped,
but writing and speaking requirements are now higher.

📌 Key things to check:
• Your test date
• Your test type (IELTS, PTE, OET, TOEFL, etc.)
• Whether old or new score standards apply to you

⚠️ If you’re combining two tests, each test is assessed based on its own date.

Staying updated now can help you avoid delays, extra costs, or even rejection.

AHPRA Registration - English Requirement Update (From 23 April 2026)

Planning to apply for nursing registration in Australia? Here’s an important update you need to know 👇

The English test score requirements have changed, depending on when you take your test.

📌 PTE Academic Update (AHPRA):

Overall: 66 → 63 (lower)
Listening: 66 → 58 (lower)
Reading: 66 → 59 (lower)
Writing: 56 → 60 (slightly higher)
⚠️ Speaking: 66 → 76 (significantly higher)

👉 While most sections are now easier, Speaking has increased a lot, this is the key area to focus on.

📅 Effective date:
Applies to tests taken on or after 23 April 2026

💡 Tip: If you're preparing for PTE for AHPRA, make sure you prioritise speaking practice to meet the new requirement.

There will be no invitation round in April, with the May round expected to be the final one for this financial year.

📊 Current quota (as of 13 March):
• Visa 190: 326 remaining/800 total
• Visa 491: 313 remaining/800 total

With invitations released in limited numbers each month, competition remains high, especially for Critical Skills occupations.

👉 If you're currently in the pool or planning your pathway to ACT, this is a good time to review and strengthen your profile.

📌 A new Canberra Matrix portal is also expected in May, which may bring some system changes.
