🌲Intraining at Tarawera Ultra-Trail UTMB 🌲
🏅Celebrating our 50k, 21k , 14k and support crew🏅
The beauty of trail racing is the varying terrain. Along Tarawera’s 50km course, we had to navigate single trails, switch backs, and an early hint of the slippery footing yet to come. As the course increases in difficulty our focus on running shifted to our feet to keep each step stable and upright.
The added challenge for our 50km and 21km runners was when those two races joined at the Blue Lake. This also was the point where the trail increased in difficulty. There was no opportunity for runners to lose focus as we weaved through masses without losing balance.
Congratulations to all our 50k runners.
🏃♂️Clare Mitchell, Kaz Ridoutt, Laura Speed, Louisa Dunk, Lydia Isokangas, Margot Manning, Steve Manning, Vic Gin
🏃♀️Congratulations to our 21km runners:
John Jenvey, Elise Ridoutt, Fiona Day, Robert Day , with a special Shout out to Fiona Day for placing 3rd in her age group 60-64
🏃Congratulations to our T14k runners
Margot Brereton, Malcolm Upton
A huge thank you to Trail Trips & Events for diligently shuttling our runners around for a wonderful Tarawera ultra-trail experience. This was a huge task co-ordinating runners and support crew to be at the various race check points at all times of the day and night for 36 hours.
A massive task done extremely well.
Tarawera is a beautiful location. We had an unseasonably wet year, turning the trail race into quite an adventure race.
Our runners will be back!!

🏅🏅Celebrating our 100k runners
The 100k runners in Tarawera had the delightful sights of Waterfalls, lakes, and Redwood forestry before descending the slopes to the geothermal fields.
Congratulations to Zoe Manning
Philip Teakle, Ian Ridoutt, Karen Spencer, Peter Pointon, Piero Hidalgo, Lucy Jenvey for finishing this scenic and gruelling course. You and your support crews put in superhuman performances this weekend.
A huge congratulations to Zoe Manning for placing 6th in the women’s field in a time of 9 hrs 45 mins, and Ian Ridoutt for winning his 60-64 age group, and for first timers…Phil, Karen, Peter, Piero & Lucy. You are all legends!!
It was through this race where the intraining community showed full strength to bring each of our 100km runners home.
Many of our 50k runners did a quick change after they finished their own event and headed out to check points to support our 100km runners get through a long, cold and wet night.
It was a tough day and night out, but each of our 100k runners worked out how much mud depth they could step Into and the usefulness of their poles before splashing through the home straight to finish.
Despite the challenges on course, there’s chatter that they’ll be back to tackle a 100km trail race again along with our Milers.
Way to go team, you were all very courageous and amazing.
50km runners, 21k & 14k runners your turn is next….

Intraining at Tarawera Ultra-Trail UTMB
We train and plan for the best possible race experience but one of the challenges is adjusting race plans mid-race for unforeseen circumstances.
Tarawera through a massive curve ball for all our race plans with days of rain creating a slippery slide over steep ascents and descents.
Conditions were so hard that of the 550 Miler entries, only about 350 finished.
It was particularly hard for the Milers and 100km runners as they had to run in the dark along the same trails churned up by the earlier 50k and 21km runners.
While we will celebrate all our runners, it is a huge congratulations to our overnight Milers , Sheila, Jon & Dave and their support crew.
A special congratulations to Sheila for completing the Miler with an energetic finish on Sunday afternoon. 👏👏
Huge Kudos to Jon for making the tough call at 120km , after comfortably ticking of the km’s, due to knees finally saying they’d had enough of sliding down the slopes.
You are all incredibly tough to have tackled the course and our intraining club are so proud of you all for giving the 167km course a go!!! We’ll look foward to your next one😁
Enjoy the pics snapped by Jon on course, and Sheila celebrating as she crosses the line
The Next post will celebrate our 100k runners .
