How to pick misguided nutrition advice?
Avoiding poor advice might be easier than initially trying to find optimal advice.
My patient this week brought a shopping bag full of expensive supplements from her chiropractor.
She (and the majority of her family) had spent years and huge sums of money seeing this therapist.
So my shopping list for a finding a (new) therapist?
Ask them if they have had any nutrition training?
If they have ever loaded you up with collagen powder, creatine, ‘special’ magnesium, ‘special’ antioxidants, ‘special’ protein powder or a special ‘skin’ formula?
Alarm bells should be ringing.
If they are talk about counting calories, ‘moving more’ to lose weight….
….You need more whole grains in your diet, eat bananas for potassium or drink yet more water….
….eat a plant-based diet….eat regular small meals through the day….
….if they can’t name the most powerful hormone in the body that in excess, erodes and ages the body….
….’you’ve tried everything and and the only option left is weight-loss injections or bariatric surgery’….
Maybe walk on.
And in the case of the over-servicing chiro?
Seek a second opinion if there is no change within a few weeks. Ask your GP if an MRI or CT is warranted?
Health is about you getting better, and spending more time living your life.
It’s not about spending your precious time and money funding a broken health system.
