Wrapping up an amazing week at the World Science Festival! We had over 3,500 kids of all ages making fatberg slime at our Urban Utilities’ ‘Smelly Science’ stand. Our fatberg monster taught us all how fats, oils, and wipes create dangerous blockages in pipes.

It was fun, it was messy, and it was a big reminder: only flush the 3 Ps! We hope our slime creations sparked curiosity about the hidden world inside our pipes and helped everyone understand how important it is to keep things flowing smoothly.

Big thanks to all the future scientists who joined us, and let’s keep the good habits going to protect our pipes and save time, money, and mess for parents everywhere!

What do wipes, cotton buds, tissues, tampons, condoms, hair, bandages, nappies and cotton balls have in common?

They are all common items which don’t belong down the toilet - and can cost you approximately in $430 out-of-pocket private plumbing fees to investigate if you get a blockage.

💲Save yourself the hassle and cost, and read our tips on how to avoid a blockage: https://www.urbanutilities.com.au/newsroom/blogs/plumbing-blockages-can-be-costly-here-s-how-to-avoid-them-MCVTCPQHMI4RCHZEO3FYZGMLVENU

Last month marked the end of Jessie’s first year in our grad program.

Jessie loved contributing to real-world engineering projects and seeing the direct impact on operational performance, safety and compliance.

She enjoyed seeing the breadth of Urban Utilities' role in protecting public health and the environment as part of the service recovery, network engineering, and process technology teams.

Jessie’s favourite moments:
✨Interacting with and helping customers with network faults and water quality enquiries.
✨Getting up close with our seasonal network preparedness and contingency planning.
✨Working onsite as a process engineer at our largest wastewater treatment plant, supporting site operation as well as working on an odour mitigation study.

But Jessie wasn’t alone. She is grateful for all the mentors, operators and engineers who have supported her along the way including her fellow grad group who she loved sharing a laugh with as they navigated grad life together.

And while she’s only halfway into the program, Jessie is excited to share she is stepping into a new role at Urban Utilities as an Operations Engineer in Network Services. Her grad experience has perfectly primed her for this role where she can shape how we keep water and wastewater flowing 24/7 for our customers across South East Queensland.

We asked our people on the frontline about their role in keeping the water flowing and the wastewater going for 1.6 million South East Queenslanders every day at Urban Utilities.

Here’s what they said:

Quick, we must stop fatberg from coming to World Science Festival!

Fatbergs feed on things like fats, oils, wet wipes, cotton buds, and nappies - stuff you shouldn’t be flushing. To reduce the risk of expensive plumbing issues, it’s best to keep those out of the pipes. 🚫💧

Join us at the World Science Festival where you can make your own slimy fatberg and learn how you can help stop fatbergs from blocking the world of wastewater!

Think you know your wastewater stuff? Comment your score below! 📝💯

Here’s the why behind the answers:
1. Hot oils and fats should never go down the kitchen sink, as they can cause costly blockages. Wait for them to cool down before using a paper towel to discard in the bin. 🗑️
2. Since milk contains fats, it’s best to dilute your bottle with tap water and give your house plants a shower! 🪴
3. Yes, it’s one more dish to clean... but catching small crumbs or herbs can save you a big plumbing bill down the line. 🤑
4. Our network is designed to handle the 3 P’s (poo, p*e and paper), but also sanitary waste like soaps, shampoos and detergents. Consider eco-friendly ones which are less likely to clog your pipes. ♻️
5. Even ‘flushable’ wet wipes should never go in the toilet. Discard in a sanitary bin instead.

UPDATE: 4:00PM, Friday 13 March 2026
⚠️ This advice has been lifted. ⚠️

The signs will be taken down at public access points in the coming days.

Thank you for your patience and understanding while we complete this once-in-a-generation renewal of the Bulimba-Hamilton Siphon.

⚠️ Important advice: Please temporarily avoid contact with part of the river between Vic Lucas Park at Bulimba and Colmslie Beach Reserve at Murarrie.

A wastewater release has occurred due to wet weather during a critical project. Activities such as swimming, wading, rowing, kayaking or fishing should be avoided in the impacted area.

We also urge everyone to always follow the advice of authorities to avoid contact with waterways during and after heavy rain.
