Donor Conception Day is….

• The day to raise awareness about the experiences of donor conceived individual’s and their families.
• The day to celebrate egg and s***m donors, and recognise their contribution to building families.
• The day to highlight those families made possible using reproductive technologies.

At Genes Australia we regularly see individuals and couples who are planning a family using donor egg and/or s***m. We thank our patients for allowing us to be a part of their journal to building their family.

On this day in 1953 James Watson and Francis Crick published their paper in the journal Nature on the structure of DNA, the DOUBLE HELIX. Because of their work, and the work of peers before and after we all know what DNA looks like. This has led to further knowledge, discoveries, and genetic technologies that we use today.

I am a huge fan of TED talks and TED Ed. Earlier this week I came across this video, How in vitro fertilisation (IVF) works.

We are all carriers for a few genetic conditions. When both biological parents are carriers of the same recessive condition, or a female is a carrier of an X linked condition there is a chance of having a child with that condition. As they are individually rare, couples are typically not carriers for the same genetic condition, and no family history is present.

Preconception carrier screening is a genetic screening test aimed at providing you with information about your chance of having a child with a serious genetic condition. This type of test screens three or more than 400 genes known to be associated with recessive or X-linked conditions.
