EMMETT Technique International

EMMETT Technique International The EMMETT Technique is a gentle, soft touch, safe and simple to apply muscle release therapy.

This internationally recognised technique developed by Ross Emmett and taught in over 40 countries worldwide is equally effective on both people and animals. The EMMETT Technique is a unique muscle release therapy developed by Australian massage and remedial therapist, Ross Emmett. The Technique involves applying light finger pressure to specific points on the body, known as "EMMETT points." These points differ from traditional trigger or acupressure points and are stimulated using gentle pressure, allowing for effective muscle release and improved movement without the need for pain. Focused on achieving physical and emotional wellbeing through minimal touch, the method is based on the principle that light touch triggers a subconscious response in the soft tissues of the body. Symptoms that have been relieved:
🔹Neck & shoulder restriction/discomfort
🔹Lymphatic congestion & breathing
🔹Migraines or headaches
🔹Abdominal cramps & bowel discomfort
🔹Heel and foot pain
🔹Dizziness & sinus congestion
🔹Back & hip discomfort
🔹Knee & ankle restriction
🔹Discomfort during pregnancy
🔹Fluid retention
🔹And much more!

🚪 Don't just force the door open.

When a joint feels stuck, the instinct is often to stretch or pull harder. The EMMETT Technique looks at the muscles acting as the 'hinge' and uses a light touch to release the tension holding it back.

✨ Restore: natural range of motion.
🗝️ Release: change without the 'rebound' tightness of high force moves.

Find your fluid movement again.

🐎 From the beach donkeys of England to the arenas of Australia.

Today the spotlight is on Rebecca Cooper from ReQuest Soft Tissue Therapies. Her journey began with a childhood obsession that spanned continents, eventually leading her from a long IT career back to her true passion: equine wellbeing.

After 10 years as a practitioner, Rebecca’s lightbulb moment remains a standout - applying a human rib release to her own horse with astonishing results. Today, as an EMMETT 4 Horses Instructor, she focuses on:

🟡 The 18th Rib/QL move - a cornerstone of the Level 1 horse course for easing tension.
🟡 Pre and post competition support - maintaining soundness and performance.
🟡 Horse wellbeing - empowering owners with the hands-on skills needed to support their horse's happiness and longevity.

A lifelong rider who currently cares for three horses of her own, Rebecca believes every horse owner should have these simple, effective tools in their repertoire. For her, it is about giving owners the practical skills to support their horse's comfort every day.

The brain processes a light touch faster than a heavy one 🧠

The EMMETT Technique works by engaging the sensory receptors within the soft tissue.

When a specific EMMETT point is activated with gentle finger pressure, the nervous system receives a signal to reset the muscle tension - much like clicking a refresh button on a computer.

Here's why it works:

🔵 Minimal input - allows the body to respond without triggering a defensive guarding reflex.
🟡 Neuromuscular reset - addresses the source of the tension rather than just the symptom.
🔵 Efficiency - the body does the work of adjusting once the correct stimulus is applied.

It is a smart, non-invasive way to approach physical discomfort that respects the body’s natural intelligence.

Why is EMMETT known as the chameleon of bodywork? 🦎

A chameleon doesn't change its environment - it adapts itself to blend in perfectly.

The EMMETT Technique operates on this same principle of intelligent adaptation. Whether used as a standalone treatment or incorporated into another modality, it adapts to the individual needs of the client while complementing the approach being used.

The chameleon advantage in practice:

🟡 Seamless integration - it blends with your existing skillset to enhance results.
🔵 Non-invasive - works with the body’s current state rather than forcing a change.
🟡 Versatile application - effective whether the client is in a clinical setting, on a sporting field, or in an aged care facility.

It is an innovative solution for practitioners who need a tool as flexible as the bodies they treat. By adjusting the pressure and placement to the individual, EMMETT ensures the body never feels the need to fight back against the correction.

A dog’s mobility is their quality of life 🐾

Just like humans, dogs experience muscle tension, stiffness from age, and physical stress from high-energy activities.

The EMMETT 4 Animals course provides owners and professionals with the skills to recognise and relieve these restrictions using specialised, light-touch points.

Common areas where EMMETT supports canine wellbeing:
🔵 Lower back and hip tightness - assisting with easier movement.
🟡 Shoulder and neck tension - often caused by pulling on a lead.
🔵 General relaxation - helping nervous or highly-strung dogs find calm.

Learning these releases creates a deeper bond and a practical way to support a four-legged friend’s comfort at home or in competition.

🧠 Chronic stress shouldn't be a permanent state.

The EMMETT Technique uses a light touch to signal the nervous system to let go of deep-seated physical tension.

By using specific reset points, practitioners can help clients shift out of fight or flight mode without the need for heavy physical force.

Calm the system, restore the body.

☀️ From long coastal walks to increased time in the gym, our bodies work harder than usual in the Australian heat.

The EMMETT Technique offers a gentle, fast-acting way to manage the common physical side effects of hot, long days.

Whether you are a professional athlete or a weekend warrior, EMMETT can assist with:

⛲ Hydration and circulation support: using specific lymphatic points to help the body manage fluid balance and reduce that feeling during a heatwave.
🦶 Foot and ankle stability: targeted releases to ease the strain of walking in flat footwear or sand.
🔴 Lower back and hip relief: balancing the body after long road trips or extra hours spent in the garden.

Keep your momentum without the stiffness. A few light touches can be the difference between a recovery day and another day of adventure.

"Is EMMETT the same as Bowen?" - a question practitioners hear often.

While both techniques use gentle touch, EMMETT Technique stands apart with its unique approach to muscle release. The key difference? EMMETT points differ from traditional trigger points and focus on light finger pressure to stimulate a subconscious response in soft tissues.

Both are gentle. Both are effective. But EMMETT offers something distinctly different - a chameleon-like adaptability that responds to what your body needs in that moment.

Today the spotlight is on our Auckland-based Instructor Simone Feist from Equilibrium Emmett Technique and Massage. Her journey began in 2012 following a back injury, led by a friend’s simple recommendation: "I don't know what she is doing, but it helps!"

That experience sparked a career shift from primary school teaching to a full-time passion for bodywork. Now an Instructor for five years, she finds particular value in:

🟡 Immediate pain relief - seeing the physical softening as tension leaves the body.
🟡 Improved mobility - helping clients return to the activities they love.
🟡 Lymphatic drainage - a vital tool for resetting the entire system.

When not in the clinic, she stays active through mountain biking, yoga, and travel. Her background in education makes her a patient, insightful mentor for those ready to explore the EMMETT Technique in New Zealand.
