Introducing . . . . The Northern Hub Travel Assistance Initiative!

The Northern Hub’s role is to build capacity, facilitate collaboration, and foster a culture of resilience across northern agricultural systems.

The Travel Assistance Initiative had been developed to assist land managers to attend relevant events that build their knowledge, skills, be informed of the latest R & D, innovations and importantly connect with industry experts and other producers.

What happens when a group of neighbours get together, back themselves and actually dig into the data?

The Torrens Creek Producer Group has been doing exactly that… and the results are speaking for themselves.

With support from The Department of Primary Industries (DPI) the group has:
✔️ Tested pasture diet quality using dung samples (F.NIRS)
✔️ Fine-tuned supplementation programs to cut waste and lift returns
✔️ Built confidence in making nutrition decisions
✔️ Toured research sites to explore new pasture & legume options and wattle control

One big takeaway for the group? Even green feed can be low in key nutrients, so knowing what’s really in front of your cattle matters.

But the real power has been in the group itself, sharing what works, what doesn’t, and learning from each other’s country.

Proof that sometimes the best ideas come from just over the fence.

Don't forget to renew or update your biosecurity entity registration!

If you own or keep livestock or beehives in Queensland it is a legal requirement to be a registered biosecurity entity (RBE). If you are a landowner, a lessee or agist your animals on someone else’s land you need to register. The purpose of this is to have accurate information about where livestock and beehives are to assess risk, trace movements and keep owners informed during an animal disease emergency.

Once registered your biosecurity entity is valid for 3 years. You must confirm your RBE details or advise registration is no longer required before the end of this term.

For more information and or to update or renew your details through the biosecurity entity registration portal visit here 👉 https://info.futurebeef.com.au/4vqIAja

Having a severe weather emergency plan gives you peace of mind that you and others on your property know what to do in a weather emergency.

Get on the front foot by completing the template and check list in the link below 👇👇

In times of emergencies and disasters, many producers turn to emergency feed sources like hay to keep their stock alive.

While it’s fundamental for survival, it is important to understand the potential impacts of substandard feed on your wool quality, specifically breaks in the fleece or tender wool.

Key tips for extended feeding periods:
✔️ Avoid time off feed: causes disruption to rumen health and function
✔️ Avoid sudden feed changes: as rumen microbes need time to adjust
✔️ Monitor feed quality: to ensure sufficient protein and energy levels
✔️ Store feed properly: to reduce wastage, spoilage and contamination
✔️ Feed in suitable locations: avoid feeding stock in very dusty or very muddy locations
✔️ Watch for weeds

If you’ve ever wanted to make more sense of genetics and herd data, this might be your person!

We’re putting a few faces to the names you might already know..

Say g’day to Greta Dunne, Beef Extension Officer based in Cloncurry.

Greta works across projects like Grazing Futures: Prepare and Prosper, along with the Queensland Pasture Resilience Project.

Originally from Biloela in Central Queensland, Greta has been with the department for nearly two and a half years. Starting out as a Technical Officer on the Repronomics project in Charters Towers sparked a strong interest in genetics, something that’s stuck ever since.

These days, she’s passionate about helping producers better understand EBVs and herd data, and what it actually means on the ground. For Greta, it’s about encouraging a deeper understanding of data and the impacts on your herd.

Quick takes:
✔ Favourite legume? Butterfly pea (hands down the prettiest legume).
✔ Ute playlist? Podcasts A Place To Call Home by Sam Fryer, "The Case Of" by the ABC, "The Week in Beef" by Beef Central and "Toni & Ryan" for a brain break.
✔ Best day on the job? First property visit to Longford, McKinlay, to visit Will Allan, it was very exciting!
✔ Passion? Genetics and helping producers get more out of their data.
✔ What she wants producers to know? We learn just as much from you as you do from us.

If you’re keen to learn more about genetics, EBVs or getting more out of your herd data, Greta is always happy to chat, reach out or catch her at the next local field day.

Give Greta a wave below 👇 or drop your go-to podcast recommendation, she’s always looking for the next one.

Feeding decisions work better when they’re based on what cattle have actually been eating, not just what the paddock looks like.

Faecal NIRS testing does exactly that – it gives you a snapshot of your cattle’s diet quality over the past few days. That’s the kind of information that helps take the guesswork out of:
• what type of supplement to use
• how much of a nutrient is actually needed
• when to start feeding
• which paddocks suit which class of stock.

Sign up for a DPI Faecal NIRS Workshop and for $75 the Department of Primary Industries (DPI) Extension Team will collect and test samples from at least two paddocks on your farm. At the workshop, you’ll go through your results and create a plan you can put into action straight away.

🚨 Clermont Cattlemen’s Challenge Update! 🚨

The cattle have officially entered Phase Two of the competition, inducted into Paringa Feedlot at the start of February after a solid 250 days grazing at Tabletop Station, Clermont.

And what a start it’s been! The steers weighed in exceptionally well, a cracking result thanks to great management and plenty of available feed!

Now the grain game begins.
They’ll spend the next 100 days on feed… then it’s the moment of truth at the annual Taste Test Competition at the Clermont Show on 26 May 🥩🔥

📅 Field Day – 15 May at Paringa Feedlot
Come and:
✔ Check out the Challenge cattle
✔ Hear from guest speakers
✔ See competitors select their steers

Each competitor will choose:
👉 1 carcass steer for taste test & hook grading
👉 3 steers judged as a pen of three for market suitability
👉 1 back-up steer (just in case!)

It’s strategy, skill and a whole lot of beef on the line.

Come along, meet the participants and start thinking about getting involved in the next competition.
