๐ŸŒฑ Better decisions start with better information.

Coolum Pastoral near Moura has transformed their 5,881ha business over generations and FutureBeef has been a big part of that journey.

FutureBeef resources helped them lift their grazing and breeding performance by:

๐Ÿ”น developing a strategic breeder plan with clear Body Condition Score (BCS) targets, using the BCS photo index to support optimal conception rates

๐Ÿ”น giving them the confidence to make informed bull selection decisions

๐Ÿ”น shaping a crossbreeding strategy that suits both their environment and feedlot markets

Keen to know more about dung beetles ? ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿป

Did you know dung beetles can be just as valuable to your sheep enterprise as your pastures?

Australia has over 500 native and 23 introduced dung beetle species, and theyโ€™re doing incredible work behind the scenes for sheep and wool producers.

By burying dung, these beetles:
๐ŸŒฑ Improve soil health and pasture growth
๐Ÿ’จ Boost soil carbon and cut greenhouse gas emissions
๐Ÿชฐ Help control flies and nematodes that contribute to flystrike and gut health issues
๐Ÿ’ง Reduce nutrient runoff during rain events

Choosing the right beetle for your climate, soil, and grazing system can make a big difference to both animal health and productivity.

The Dung Beetle Ecosystem Engineers (DBEE) project is helping producers access new beetle species and find the best match for their properties.

Healthy beetles, healthy soils, healthy sheep! ๐Ÿ‘๐ŸŒฑ

๐ŸŒฑ Was Charles Darwin right?

โ€œWith plants there is a vast destruction of seeds, I believe it is the seedlings which suffer most from germinating in ground already stocked with other plants.โ€

If youโ€™re trying to get pasture to establish in the seasonally dry tropics of northern Queensland, Darwinโ€™s words hit the nail on the head.

Hereโ€™s how to give your seedlings the best chance:
โœ… Minimise competition - Seedlings donโ€™t stand a chance if theyโ€™re sprouting beneath or beside mature plants fighting for light, water and nutrients.

โœ… Choose the right seed at the right time - Tropical pasture seeds often come with โ€œwildโ€ traits (small size, hard coatings) and need precise timing to catch that narrow window of moisture.

โœ… Get the seedbed right - Good soil contact, correct sowing depth (seedling energy reserves are limited), and placing seed when the wet season begins make enormous difference.

โœ… Work the numbers - Many seeds donโ€™t make it. Thatโ€™s why sowing rates and placement matter.

โœ… Pick the right species for your situation - Deep-rooted legumes or grasses can bring big benefits (nitrogen, feed quality, resilience) but they must match your soils and grazing system.

NT DAF and NT DLPE have recently started working to fill pasture and soil data gaps by installing SWIFTSYND sites (30mx30m exclosures) on underrepresented land types across the NT.

These will add to the ~60 already existing sites, from which pasture and soil data is regularly collected to calibrate the GRASP model ๐Ÿ–ฅ - which helps us estimate long term median pasture growth!

๐ŸŒฟ From Kikuyu Collapse to Comeback

Pasture dieback has hit hard across south-east Queensland, especially for producers whoโ€™ve long relied on kikuyu. Once the go-to grass for holding soil on slopes and in drainage lines, kikuyuโ€™s high susceptibility to dieback has left many paddocks bare and overrun with weeds.

So the big question is: whatโ€™s next?

Producers like Bradley Frohloff from Upper Yarraman have faced the challenge head-on.

โ€œIt was stressful and there were sleepless nights,โ€ Bradley says, โ€œbut we came out the other side and actually have more feed than cattle.โ€

By switching to dieback-tolerant tropical grasses like Rhodes, Gatton Panic, Signal and Setaria and good grazing management, producers are finding a new way forward.

These grasses might look a bit different, but with good timing, rest and nutrition, they can deliver quality feed and long-term resilience.

Adding legumes such as Desmanthus, stylo, medic or clover boosts soil fertility and animal performance even further.

Dieback doesnโ€™t have to mean the end of productivity - it can be the start of a more resilient, productive pasture system. ๐ŸŒพ

๐Ÿšจ Keep an eye out for Bradleyโ€™s upcoming case study to see how he rebuilt his pastures.

Year three of the ๐ŸŒพ Crops for Cattle ๐Ÿฎ project is underway in the NT and this year's weaners are thoroughly enjoying it!

At Katherine Research Station, Mel is feeding out pellets every day until the wet season hits and pasture quality improves.

๐Ÿ“ˆ The project is recording the production benefits and costs of doing so with different feeds on multiple properties across the northern NT, to help producers identify feeding options to increase dry season weight gains that are profitable in current markets.

Some of the preliminary findings can be found here: https://info.futurebeef.com.au/4q1iDE0

And further results will become available as the project continues.

Isabella is the founder of the online business Prinking in Pindan and co-manager of Leopold Downs Station, a pastoral station in the Kimberley๐Ÿงต

Her online business, which creates stylish and durable clothing suitable for the demanding lifestyle of rural women, began out of the need for jeans that could withstand the harsh conditions of outback Australia๐Ÿ‘–

Isabella represented WA at the prestigious national award, which celebrates the essential role women play in rural industries, businesses and communities.

๐Ÿ„ Spot it early, stop it fast!

Early detection of unusual disease signs in livestock is one of the most important steps you can take to protect your property and the wider industry.

โš ๏ธ Look out for: sudden deaths, unusual drooling, lameness, blistering, respiratory distress, severe diarrhoea, tremors, incoordination or abortions.

๐Ÿ“ž If something seems off, report it!
- Your private vet
- Emergency Animal Disease Hotline: 1800 675 888 (24/7)
- Your state or territory agriculture/primary industries department

Providing clear details and photos helps experts act quickly to contain outbreaks and protect animal welfare, trade, and your property.

๐ŸŒพ Bouncing Back from Pasture Dieback ๐ŸŒพ

Pasture dieback has been a tough challenge across Southeast Queensland, but thereโ€™s a way forward.

At recent field days across the region, producers came together to share whatโ€™s working: combining tolerant grass species with tropical and temperate legumes to bring productivity and land condition back to life.

Change is never easy, but thereโ€™s opportunity in every paddock, a chance to rebuild stronger, more resilient pastures for the future.

Supported by Queensland Government and partners: Condamine Headwaters Landcare Group Inc., Local Land Services NSW, Healthy Land & Water, SWQ Innovation Hub, and Upper Yarraman Farmers Hall
