Hit the Sweet Spot: boost calf survival and herd performance!

After 7 years of sifting through data, the message is clear: as pasture utilisation climbs, breeder performance declines.

Higher utilisation =
• Lower pregnancy rates
• Fewer cows back in calf early
• Higher foetal & calf loss

Timing is everything. More green, good-quality feed around calving = better reconception and higher weaning rates.

Breed matters too: Bos indicus herds showed more resilience under pressure, but even they have their limits on tougher country.

🎯 The sweet spot? Managing pasture quality and utilisation, especially around calving, is one of the biggest levers for lifting reproduction and calf survival in the north.

Check out the results from the Sweet Spot project here 👉 https://info.futurebeef.com.au/4oMpCPo

Find your sweet spot of optimal utilisation by contacting your local extension officer, your calves will thank you.

🌱 Distance? No problem!

Producers hundreds of kilometres apart are now learning, sharing and regenerating paddocks together from the lounge room.

Thanks to Meat & Livestock Australia, FutureBeef + Queensland Pasture Resilience Program's new online forum.

The program gives beef producers practical feed-base and pasture management advice via peer-learning and real time support.

Some producers have started planting legumes, others are clearing or fencing - all are making better informed decisions for their country.

This mode of learning isn't just convenient, it’s impactful. It’s reducing barriers to participation, connecting producers with expertise when they need it, and supporting on-ground practice change at scale.

👀 Spotted 👀

Extension Officers, Kacie Baker and Shannon Byrnes, providing information to cane growers on transitioning to cattle production at a recent field day in Mossman.

Following the closure of Mossman Mill cane producers in the region are looking for alternative production opportunities. The field day provided the opportunity for growers to speak to a range of industry professionals on transition options.

Kacie and Shannon shared with the growers all the information that FutureBeef has on their website that could help them in having a productive, profitable and sustainable beef business.

🚨 Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) and lumpy skin disease (L*D) - What's going on in Europe and why we should all be watching closely!

Europe has dealt with new FMD and L*D outbreaks this year, and their experience is a sharp reminder of how quickly things can change.

Some of the key takeaways are:
• FMD can appear without obvious movements. Germany’s case came from a small property with no recent stock or trade movements, likely via contaminated products or visitors.
• Fast response matters. Standstills, culling and wide testing helped Germany regain FMD-free status within months.
• Human-linked spread is real. The Hungary/Slovakia outbreak spread between farms via visitors, workers, & tankers.
• L*D spread is harder to control. First detected in Sardinia, then moved through Italy, France and Spain. Limited vaccination and movement breaches allowed it to keep spreading.
• Silent spread is the danger. L*D likely circulated for months before anyone noticed.

Why it matters here?
Strong farm biosecurity, controlling visitor access, and early reporting remain our best defence. What’s happening overseas reinforces that even one slip can have big consequences for our markets.

Attention Australian cattle producers! 🐄

Animal Health Australia is calling for your help to support our national export market through the National Arbovirus Monitoring Program (NAMP).

NAMP monitors the distribution of insect-borne viruses affecting ruminant livestock (including bluetongue virus, Akabane virus and bovine ephemeral fever) and their insect vectors.

By participating (providing a small number of blood samples from young cattle, or setting insect traps), producers help us detect changes in virus distribution early, protecting export compliance and helping keep overseas markets open.

It’s a small ask with big benefits for yourself and the Australian beef industry as a whole.
